No. 4 Wrestling finishes in fourth after the first day of the Midwest Classic

Indianapolis, Ind.- The No. 4 Lander wrestling team saw six wrestlers advance to the second day of the Midwest Classic after finishing in fourth after the first day of competition.

James Joplin, Elijah Lusk, Zeth Brower, Jack Bond, Logan Hall and Anthony Yacovetti all advanced.

The Bearcats finished fourth among 43 teams after the first day of competition after only bringing nine wrestlers and using three non-starters.

The second day of the Midwest Classic begins at 9:30 am on Sunday.

James Joplin (125) 2-1
Joplin began his day with a 20-3 tech fall over Aidan Haggard of Maryville that featured four takedowns in the first period along with a four-point near fall in the first and third periods. 

Joplin then defeated Trevon Gray of Pittsburgh-Johnstown 9-2 that saw two takedowns and a two-point near fall in the third period.

In his third match, Joplin would go up against Studd Morris of Central Oklahoma in the quarterfinals. Morris, who was ranked No. 7 in the latest NWCA Div. II poll, won 9-7 in overtime.

Elijah Lusk (133) 4-0
In his first match of the day, Lusk took down Hunter Pfantz of Southwest Minnesota State 10-1. Lusk used a takedown and a four-point near fall in the first period to jump out to an early lead and never looked back.

Lusk then battled his way to an 8-6 win by decision over Tommy Frezza of Central Missouri. Lusk used a pair of reversals in the third period to take a one-point edge while getting an additional point from riding time.

In his third match of the day, Lusk overpowered  Jackson Collins of Tiffin with a 15-0 tech fall. Lusk recorded four-point near falls in the second and third periods to take the victory.

Entering the quarterfinals, Lusk defeated No. 5 Breyden Bailey of the University of Indianapolis. Lusk is currently ranked No. 6 at 133 in the NWCA rankings. Lusk was able to earn a 7-3 win after getting a reversal and a takedown in the third period while adding an additional point from riding time.

Zeth Brower (141) 3-0
Brower began his day dispatching Leslie Davenport of Wiliam Jewell with a 12-2 major decision. Brower used a pair of takedowns in the first period to establish an early lead while getting an escape and two more takedowns in the third to widen the gap.

In his second match of the day, Brower won 7-2 by decision against James Ryan of Gannon. Brower took a 4-2 edge after the first period while getting a reversal in the second period and an additional point from riding time for the 7-2 win.

In the quarterfinal match, Brower defeated Laken Boese of the University of Mary with a pin in the third period. Before the pin, Brower was leading 9-2 over Boese.

Randy Myers (149) 1-2
Myers fell in two of his three matches on the day, both by narrow margins. In his first match, Myers fell 3-1 to Demetri Teddie of King.
He'd follow that up with a first-period pin of Graham Rocha of Lincoln Memorial before falling to Mike Zacur of Mercyhurst 3-2 to end his day.

David Hunsberger (165) 2-2
Hunsberger started his day with a 10-3 win by decision over Gary Nilson of the University of Findlay. Hunsberger scored a pair of takedowns in the first and second periods while also getting an escape and a point from riding time in the third. 

In his second match of the day, Hunsberger would fall in a close match to Cory Peterson of McKendree 5-4. Peterson was ranked No. 2 in the latest NWCA Div. II rankings.

Battling in the consolation bracket, Hunsberger faced off with reigning Super Region II Freshman of The Year Jake Nicolosi of Mount Olive. Hunsberger would come away with a 6-4 victory after battling his way back down 4-3. Hunsberger got two points from a reversal, a point off a second stall warning and a point from riding time to finish the match.

Hunsberger concluded the Midwest Classic with a 7-5 loss in overtime to Augustus Dalton from Colorado Mesa.

Jack Bond (174) 3-1
Bond began his day with a second period­­ pin over Austin Collins of Coker.

Bond kept things rollings as he smashed Sherman Franklin of Bluefield State 17-2 to pick up a tech fall. Bond scored seven points in the second period as he earned an escape, takedown and a four-point near fall.

Going up against Scott Kellenberger of Upper Iowa, Bond earned a late 5-4 victory. After a scoreless first and a second period that saw the two tied 3-3, Kellenberger would take a one-point edge with an escape early in the third before Bond would land a late takedown to seal the victory. 

Bond fell to the consolation bracket after a 9-2 quarterfinal loss to Brandon Matthews of Seton Hill.

Logan Hall (184) 3-0­­
Hall started his day off in style with an 11-3 major decision over Jack Mackiernan of American International. Hall scored takedowns in all three periods with also getting escapes in the second and third.

Hall then faced Shylik Scriven of UNC Pembroke next. Hall would come away with a 6-1 win by decision after an escape in the second period and a four-point near fall coming in the third.

Hall advanced to the semifinals after he defeated Brock Biddle of Pittsburgh-Johnstown 3-1. Hall got all three points in the third period with an escape and a takedown to establish the lead.

Anthony Yacovetti (197) 4-1
Yacovetti began his with a pin of Joseph Swanson of Wisconsin-Parkside in the second period. Yacovetti was up 10-0 before the pin. 

He then earned a 17-1 tech fall victory against B.K. Seago of Drury University. He scored three two-point near falls with one coming in the third period after getting a reversal.

Yacovetti would fall 5-1 to Chase Stegall of Maryville in the second round.

After the loss, Yacovetti would record back-to-back victories to advance to the second day. Yacovetti would record a pin against Jacob Kowalski of the University of Findlay in the second period while taking a 5-2 win by decision against Logan Kvien of McKendree in the second consolation match.

Greyson Latham (285) 1-2
Latham began his day with a 6-3 win by decision over John Caroll III of Belmont Abbey. After a scoreless first period, Latham used a four-point near fall after starting the period on top while getting a pair of escapes for his six points.

He'd then fall 10-1 to La'Ron Parks of Notre Dame College and 4-1 to Matthias Ervin of Central Missouri before falling to Mattias Ervin of Central Missouri 4-1.
