Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Four Double-Digit Scorers not Enough as Bearcats fall to Cougars, 76-64

COLUMBUS, GA. - The Lander Women's Basketball Team started their Peach Belt Conference slate on Thursday afternoon as they would fall to the Columbus State Cougars by a score of 76-64. The Bearcats were able to get it within a two-possession game on a few occasions but couldn't close the gap any more as Columbus State was able to keep the Blue and Gold at arm's length to close out the game.

Four Bearcats were in double figures and Quadaija Langley and Kayla Sanders both flirted with double-doubles. Langley finished with 13 points and nine rebounds while Sanders finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. Jakiyah Parker finished with 11 points and Tyasia Freeman finished with ten to close out the double digit scorers for Lander.

Freeman would open the scoring with a layup to give Lander a 2-0 lead early but Columbus State would respond on the next possession that set the tone for a back and forth first quarter. The Cougars would find themselves with a five point lead late in the quarter but back to back threes from Jakiyah Parker would give the Bearcats a one point lead. However, the hosts would hit a buzzer beater three from just within half court to snatch the lead right back after the first ten minutes of action.

The back and forth pattern would continue as Lander would keep Columbus State's lead to one or two possessions. A quick 6-2 run for the Bearcats would cut the lead to one. After a defensive stop, Cory Santoro would have a chance to give the Bearcats the lead but couldn't convert on a three-point attempt and from there the rest of the quarter would be all Cougars as they would close the quarter on a 12-0 run to give them a 39-26 lead heading into halftime.

Lander would respond coming out of halftime with a 12-4 run of their own to cut the lead back down to five  The teams would exchange baskets before threes from Langley and Parker would cut the lead down to two. Lander would have a couple of crucial turnovers that would allow the Cougars to extend their lead back to six but a basket from Vashae Rideout and free throws from Langley would cut the lead down to four heading into the last ten minutes of action.

Tanyia Gordon would hit a layup to open the quarter to get the Bearcats back within two but Columbus State would use a quick 8-0 run to open the lead back to ten. Back to back buckets from Freeman and Santoro would cut the lead to six but that would be as close as Lander would get. The Cougars would open the lead back up to ten, a Gordon free throw would get it down to single digits for the last time. A couple of layups from Columbus State and a free throw from Rideout would close out the scoring.

The Bearcats are back in action on Sunday as they travel to Myrtle Beach to take on the Wingate Bulldogs. That game is scheduled for a 5:00 PM tip-off.
