Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bearcats Shoot Better but Fall to Tusculum, 77-64

Greeneville, Tenn. - After a hard-fought win over Fayetteville State on Sunday afternoon in which the Lander Women's Basketball team struggled to find their shooting stroke, the Bearcats would find consistency shooting the ball but a stark deficit on the boards to a Tusculum team that averaged close to 50 rebounds per game would prove to be the difference as the Pioneers would pull away late for a 77-64 win.

With the loss, the Bearcats fell to 2-4 on the season while the Pioneers moved to 6-1 on the season.

Three Bearcats were in double digits as Tanyia Gordon would lead the way with 16 points, she was followed closely by Cory Santoro with 14 points, and Quadaija Langley with 13 points. Anne Secrest and Vashae Rideout would both lead the team with four rebounds.

After shooting 1-17 from behind the arc in the game against the Broncos, it seemed fitting that the first three buckets for the Bearcats would come from three-point range, the last one from Cory Santoro would tie the game at nine. Tusculum would get a quick four point run but Anne Secrest would cut the lead back to one with a traditional three-point play. Lander would continue to respond to any run that Tusculum would have as a Langley three-pointer would tie the game at 15, and buckets by Tanyia Gordon would tie the game at 17 and 19 to end the first quarter of play.

Lander would shoot 63% from the floor in the first ten minutes of action, however, the second quarter would see points harder to come by. The quarter would not start that way as Langley would hit a three to give Lander a one point lead. Cory Santoro would follow on the next possession with a bucket of her own to extend the lead to three. The Pioneers would cut the lead to one on two separate occasions but Gordon and Tyasia Freeman would extend the lead back out to three. Unfortunately the bucket by Freeman with 5:44 left would be the last points the Bearcats would get in the quarter as Tusculum would close the first half on a 10-0 run to take a 35-28 lead going into the break.

The Pioneers would extend their run to 17 points to start the second half but a jumper by Tanyia Gordon would spark an 11-0 run for Lander to cut the Pioneer lead to three at 42-39. Tusculum would break the scoring streak with a layup but a three from Secrest would see the lead cut down to two going into the media timeout. After the timeout, Tusculum would use a 12-4 run to put some more distance on the Bearcats and take a ten point lead into the last quarter of action.

Tanyia Gordon would go on a solo 4-1 run to cut the lead to seven but that would be the closest as the Bearcats would get in the final ten minutes as Tusculum would continue to keep the Bearcats at arm's length and not allow them to cut into the lead any more. Kayla Sanders would get the lead back down to single digits for the last time with a layup but the Pioneers would score the final five points of the game to close out the 77-64 scoreline.

The Lander Women's Basketball team will have ten days off before they host the Limestone Saints in the Bearcats' last home game before Christmas on Saturday, December 10th. That game is scheduled to tip at 1:30 PM.
