GREENWOOD - The No. 7 Lander wrestling team defended Horne Arena as it took down Southeastern University, the No. 3 team in the NAIA, 28-9 Friday evening.
Lander improves to 4-0 overall and 3-0 at home while Southeastern drops to 1-1 overall.
The Fire took an early 3-0 lead after
Kaiden Fisher lost to Isaac Crowell, a NAIA All-American and national qualifier 12-8.
Elijah Lusk moved to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in duals with a 16-0 tech fall in the first period. Of his eight wins this season, Lusk has recorded five tech falls.
Zeth Brower was next to pick up a win for Lander. Winning 7-3, Brower remains perfect at 8-0 overall and 4-0 in duals. Brower was able to gain separation late in the third with a nifty reversal and a point from riding time.
Jack Tangen kept the points coming in to give Lander an 11-3 edge. Tangen battled his way to a 4-1 win by decision with an escape and a point from riding time coming in the third period. Tangen moves 6-2 overall.
The Fire would pick up another win by decision at 157 as NAIA All-American Sal Silva would defeat
Bryson Ethington 13-7.
Lander would respond with a 13-3 win by major decision from
David Hunsberger. Hunsberger is 7-1 after the victory over NAIA national qualifier Wyatt Kirkham and has picked up bonus points in all of his wins this season.Â
Jack Bond would fall to NAIA All-American Stephen Kelle 3-1 in sudden victory at 174 for the final win of the night for Southeastern.
Logan Hall would respond with a 4-1 victory at 184. After being down 1-0 heading into the third, Hall used an escape and a takedown to flip the script while getting the fourth point from riding time to give Lander an 18-9 lead.
Anthony Yacovetti would wrestle a near-perfect three periods as he defeated his opponent 12-1. Yacovetti has a win by major decision, tech fall and a pin in his three wins this season.
Juan Edmond-Holmes closed out the Bearcat victory with a pin 51 seconds into the first period to give Lander its 28-9 victory. Of his now six wins this season, Edmond-Holmes has won by pin four times.
The Bearcats will send a squad to compete in the Life University open on November 19 before preparing to travel to Emmanuel for a South Atlantic Conference Carolina match on December 1.
