CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Lander wrestling team saw part of its team compete in The Citadel Open on Sunday with three Bearcats finishing in first place.
The Bearcats were one of three Div. II schools competing against mainly Div. I schools. Lander also finished with the most first-place finishes among all competing schools.
Zeth Brower (141),
David Hunsberger (165) and
Logan Hall (184) all finished first in their respective weight classes.
Elijah Lusk,
Jack Bond Jack Tangen and
Juan Edmond-Holmes all placed in the top six.
Brower started his day with a 4-0 win by decision before taking a victory by fall against Dillon Roman from The Citadel to advance to the semifinals. Brower would once again win by decision, a 4-1 victory, to advance to the finals. In the finals for the 141-weight class, Brower would use a 12-1 major decision over Cole Thomas of Chattanooga to take first place.
Hunsberger would begin his day with a fall in the first period after getting a pair of four-point near falls against Tyler Chittum of Presbyterian. He would follow that performance with a 17-2 tech fall of Aiden Lenz of The Citadell before earning an 18-6 major decision on Caleb Campos of American to move to the finals. Hunsberger would continue to dominate as he took first place on the back of a 16-1 tech fall over Brodie Porter of The Citadel.
Hall started his day with a 4-0 decision before winning by major decision 10-1 over Landon Lewis of Chattanooga in the quarterfinals. Hall would battle his way to a 3-2 win by decision over Colin Shannon of American in the semifinals. After falling behind 1-0 after the second period, Hall would use an escape and takedown in the third period to gain the lead. In the championship match, Hall would take a 10-3 victory by decision to earn first place. Hall earned four of his 10 points with takedowns in the first period while using an escape and a pair of technical violations by Sergio Desuante of Chattanooga in the third period to widen the lead.
Lusk would start his day with a 7-5 loss to Jack Maida of American. In his first match in the consolation bracket, Lusk would earn a 13-1 major decision over Noah Burstein of Davidson that featured three takedowns and a four-point near fall. Lusk would then rattle off a pair of wins by decision to claim fifth place.Â
Tangen started his day with a 7-5 loss before winning by pin in the first consolation match of the day in the third period. Tangen would earn yet another win by pin this time in the second period. Tangen would conclude his day in sixth place.
Bond began his day with a narrow loss as well, as he would fall 9-7 to Thomas Sell of Chattanooga. Bond would then battle his way to a tight 6-5 victory over Reed Douglass of Presbyterian that saw Bond up 6-4 before a late escape closed the score to one point. Next for Bond was a 17-1 tech fall victory over Ian James of Truett McConnell. After allowing an escape in the first period, Bond would score 15 straight points to earn the win. Bond would fall by pin to take sixth place at 174.
Edmond-Holmes began his day at 285 with a bang. He won by pin 1:56 in the first period over Jonathan Chesser. Edmond-Holmes would enter the consolation bracket after a 3-1 loss but would rebound with a victory by pin against Morvens Saint Jean of Presbyterian 2:25 into the first period. Edmond-Holmes recorded yet another pin, this time 1:39 into the first period against Connor Barket of Duke before winning 15-13 against Chesser in the fourth period in the fifth place match.
FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - Lander sent another group to compete in the Georgia Invitational hosted by Emmanuel College on Sunday.
Isham Peace,
Xander McWilliams and
Matthew Jimenez all finished in the top six at the Georgia Open.
Peace started his day with a 16-4 win by major decision against Brenden Wharton of Montreat before winning 13-3 by major decision against Gabriel McGlamery of Life. Moving to the semifinals, Peace won by major decision yet again, this time 12-4 against Smaill Saint Pierre of Limestone. Going up against Victor Guzman of Cumberland, Peace would fall in a 6-4 match to take second place at 141.
McWilliams would begin his day at 157 winning 7-5 by decision over Nicholas Williams. In the quarterfinals, McWilliams would win by decision yet again, this time against Clinton Morrisette of King 3-2. Traqil Young of Montreat would hand McWilliams a 4-2 loss before he would rebound with an 11-4 victory in the consolation semifinals. Going up against Hagen Heistrand of Campbell, McWilliams would fall 15-3 to take fourth place.
Jimenez would begin his day at 285 with a win by fall against Ben Foskey of Emmanuel. Jimenez would take the quarterfinals with a 9-4 win by decision before pinning Calvin Hayford of Campbell to advance to the first-place match. Going up against Chad Nix, Jimenez would fall 8-2 to take second place.
Lander returns to action on November 17 when it welcomes Allen University along with Emory&Henry to Horne Arena.
