GREENWOOD – For the first time since 2019, the No. 17 Lander men's soccer team is heading to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Finals after taking down Georgia Southwestern 3-0 at Van Taylor Stadium on a rainy Sunday afternoon.
Lander moves to 10-3-5 overall while GSW sees its season end with a 6-8-4 overall record.
With the exception of the 2021 COVID spring season, Head coach
Lee Squires has recorded 10 or more wins in every season since coming to Lander in 2015. Squires is also now 51-9-5 at Van Taylor Stadium. He is just one win away from recording his 100th victory at Lander. With the victory over Georgia Southwestern, Squires currently holds a 99-27-17 overall record at Lander and a 139-28-24 overall record.
Lander held GSW to just two shots on goal the entire game while the Bearcats put 9-of-16 shots on targets.
Both teams held each other in check for the first 35 minutes of the contest. Things would swing in favor of the Bearcats after
Max Bolton collected a GSW header in the box and found the back of the goal to put Lander up 1-0 in the 36th minute of action for his second goal of the season.
The Bearcats would hold onto their 1-0 advantage going into the half. Lander attempted five shots compared to two from the Hurricanes in the first half.
Lander would start to take over in the second half as the Bearcats would ramp up their offense with 11 shots taken in the second frame.
Rob Dymond would score his first goal of the season after putting away a rebound off a
Max McNulty attempt in the box to push Lander ahead 2-0 in the 52nd minute of action.
The Bearcats would see their scoring finalized with a strike from
Marco Gueli who scored his 13th goal of the season with McNulty picking up the assist in the 76th minute of action.
Lander has shut out the Hurricanes in all three meetings this season along with outscoring GSW 5-0 in those three contests.
Lorenzo Ferrari recorded his sixth shutout of the season after making two saves. Ferrari is now 7-1-3 overall this season.
Lander will host either No. 2 Flagler or No. 3 Clayton State at Van Taylor Stadium on Sunday, November 6 in the PBC Tournament Finals.
