ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Trailing Flagler 21-15 after the first quarter, the fifth-ranked Bearcats outscored the Saints 24-8 in the second quarter to take a ten-point halftime lead and went on for a 77-63 Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 6-5 early in the game, Makaila Cangé would hit a layup to give Lander the one-point lead, but the Saints responded with a 10-2 run to take a 16-9 lead. Flagler continued to lead by as many as 10 points with less than a minute left in the period, but the Bearcats got layups from Cangé and Vashae Rideout to make it a six-point game after ten minutes.
The Lander offense picked up where it left off, starting the period with ten straight points to take a 25-21 lead. The Saints would snap the Lander run with a basket to make it 25-23. Aniaya Jester found Miriam Recarte and Rideout for layups on back-to-back plays to stretch the lead to six. With just over a minute left in the half, Jester took a pass from Recarte and drained a three-point basket to give the Bearcats their largest lead at that point, 39-27.
The Bearcats continued to pull away in the third period, and with just over a minute remaining, Recarte hit a three-pointer to make it a 20 point game, and Lander held on for the 14 point win.
Cangé led a group of four Bearcats in double figures, scoring a game-high 23 points and grabbing 18 rebounds to record her 10th double-double of the season. Amiaya Melvins added 15 points and eight rebounds, and Recarte scored 14 points and had three blocks. Jester finished with 12 points and five assists, while Sarah Crews also had five assists.
