GREENWOOD – Competing at home for the first time since hosting the Carolina Clash, the Lander wrestling team came away with a 22-20 win against King University at Horne Arena on Thursday evening.
Lander moves to 7-2 overall and 5-0 in the SACC while King drops to 5-6 overall and 2-2 in the SACC.
The Bearcats fell behind 6-0 after losses at 149 and 157 to begin the match.
Gage Bernall got Lander on the scoreboard with a 12-2 major decision to make it 6-4 King. Bernall used a four-point near fall in the second period to gain separation while recording two takedowns and an escape in the third to secure bonus points.
Jack Bond was next to score for Lander, as he came away with a 7-2 win by decision. King would get a win by pin at 184 before Darius Parker responded with a 20-5 tech fall. Parker had three takedowns and a four-point near fall in the first period to get the ball rolling and tie the match at 12-12.
Cameron Coffman kept the momentum going for Lander as he secured a pin at the 4:05 mark in the second period to give the Bearcats an 18-12 edge.
The Tornado would get a win by decision at 125 while Elijah Lusk would secure a 15-1 win by major decision that featured a four-point near fall in the first and second period.
King would conclude the match with a pin at 141 with the Bearcats winning 22-20.
Lander hosts a tri-match against Limestone and Newberry next on February 3.
