Americus, Ga. – The Lander men's basketball team fell to Georgia Southwestern 62-61 on the road Saturday afternoon.
Lander drops to 8-8 overall and 3-4 in the PBC while GSW moves to 5-10 overall and 1-6 in the PBC.
Deandre Robinson led the Bearcats in scoring with 17 points on the day. He went 6-of-9 from the field and 5-of-8 from long distance. DaJuan Moorer and Nigel Colvin joined Robinson in double figures for scoring, with the pair both scoring 10 points.
The Bearcats found themselves down 10-5 after the first five minutes of play, with all five points coming from Robinson. With 11:17 remaining, Lander tied the contest at 10-10 after a layup from Moorer and a 3-point shot from Colvin connected. The Bearcats would see their first-half lead stretch to 10 points after a jumper from LaRaymond Spivery went through to make it a 27-17 game with 3:50 left in the first half. The two sides would trade points, with the Hurricanes getting the lead down to six points with 2:13. A 3-pointer from Robinson brought the Bearcat's lead back to nine with 1:47 but GSW would be able to get the score to 31-25 at the end of the first half.
The two sides would be tied once more in the second half, as GSW used a 14-8 run to tie the contest at 39-39 with 14:33 left in the second half. The Hurricanes would take the lead shortly after, but Lander would take it back shortly after with a pair of free throws from Navaugh Maise with 13:39 left to make it a 41-40 game.
Lander and Georgia Southwester would spar for the remainder of the half, with neither side taking a lead larger than four. Lander would use a 4-0 run to tie the game at 60-60 with 1L47 left after layups from Moorer and Zane Rankin were successful. GSW would take the lead back with 44 seconds after a layup of their own and hold on for its first conference victory of the season.
Lander rounds out its road swing with a trip to Clayton State on Monday, January 24.
