GREENWOOD, S.C. - Lander junior forward
Makaila Cange scored a school single-game record of 43 points on 16 of 18 shooting from the floor, leading the No. 10-ranked Bearcats to a 105-66 Peach Belt Conference victory over Augusta Wednesday night at Horne Arena.
Lander earned its 16th consecutive win over the Jaguars, improving to 11-2 overall and 3-1 in the PBC.
Augusta fell to 9-4, 2-2.
Cange broke Lander's previous school record of 41 points held by Ty'Hesha Reynolds (2016-17), Aarika Judge (2012-13) and Lorain Truesdale (1992-93).
Her 16 field goals is also a school record, breaking
Zamiya Passmore's 15 against Azusa Pacific in the NCAA Tournament in March 2021 as well as 15 by Reynolds. Cange made 14 field goals against Johnson C. Smith on Nov. 26, 2021.
Cange also posted her eighth double-double of the season, pulling down 18 rebounds including 12 on the defensive end. Cange also made 11 of 12 free throws.
Passmore also had a huge game with 24 points while leading the Bearcats with nine assists.
Miriam Recarte added 11 points for Lander but made her mark on the defensive end. She blocked seven shots and changed several other shots with her presence while also adding five assists and four steals.
Amiaya Melvins and
Aniaya Jester added nine and eight points respectively on a combined 7-for-9 shooting for the Blue and Gold.
Sarah Crews only scored two points but dished out seven assists and added four steals.
Lander came into the game leading the PBC and second in NCAA Division II with 18.3 assists per game and surpassed that in a big way with 29 assists Wednesday.
Zairya West led the Jaguars with 21 points while Kiera Howard added 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting.
The Bearcats had a big shooting night, making 40 of 63 shots from the floor (64 percent) to 25 of 64 for Augusta (39 percent) while out-rebounding the Jaguars 44-30.
Lander built a 14-0 lead in the game's first five minutes as Cange scored nine points on 4-of-5 shooting, Passmore had three points, two assists and a steal; and Recarte added a bucket, two blocked shots and a steal. Augusta was 0-for-9 from the floor before finally scoring with 4:55 left in the opening quarter.
The Jaguars closed within 18-8 on Howard's layup with 2:09 left in the first period. But Passmore's three-point play sent the Bearcats into the second quarter with a 21-8 advantage.
Passmore's three points was part of Lander's second 14-0 run of the game, including the start of the contest and then 14 more unanswered points that increased the lead to 32-8. Cange had 18 of those 32 points.
A modest run pulled Augusta within 36-14. But Cange and Passmore converted three-point plays, Recarte hit a 3-pointer from the right side, and Crews collected a steal and layup as the Blue and Gold's advantage grew to 47-16 with 4:33 left in the half.
Lander led 53-30 at the half behind Cange's 24 points on 10-of-11 shooting and nine rebounds while Passmore had 12 points and five assists.
Cange tied her career high of 31 points with 6:55 still left in the third quarter when she took a lob pass from Crews, made the layup, was fouled and converted the three-point play to make it 64-37. Cange's put-back on Lander's next possession gave her a new career high.
Cange finished the third quarter with a pair of free throws as the Bearcats led 80-46 going into the final period.
The advantage ballooned to 43 points as Lander opened the fourth quarter with a 9-0 run. Passmore opened the period with a layup and would add a 3-pointer from the left corner while
Vashae Rideout had two steals and two layups building the lead to 89-46.
Cange scored inside at the six-minute mark and then tied the school record with a pair of free throws, making it 97-55 with 5:33 to go.
With 3:10 left in the game, Jester threw a pass down low to Cange. She was hacked on the arm and went to the line with a chance to break the record. She made both free throws, both nothing but net, and then left the game with 43 points.
