Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Bearcats leave the Pacer Invitational at 2-0 on the final day

Aiken, S.C. – The Bearcats volleyball team finished the last day of the Pacer Invitational winning both of their games against Coker and Converse in straight sets.

In their first game against Coker, Christina Aguayo lead with 16 kills, while Madilyn Reed had a team-high in assists with 32 on the game. The Bearcats led Coker in aces at 9-3, with Ashlan Glasgow contributing five.

The Cobras of Coker kept things close during the first set, but after a 18-18 tie, Lander never looked back and controlled the set winning 25-19. In the second set, the Bearcats showed resilience after being down early 5-1. Rallying back to tie up the set at 8 points, the Bearcats went on to take the lead, and Coker could never regain it losing 25-17. The third set went back and forth but again at the 8-point mark, Lander gained a spark after an Aguayo kill assisted by Reed. The Bearcats went on to win 25-18, finishing the game 3-0.

The final game for the Bearcats at the Pacer Invitational against Converse was highlighted by defense. Daria De Carvalho Peixe led both sides with four blocks, while Aguayo, Miranda Hardin, and Patricia Pantoja all had double digit digs, 16, 13, and 10 respectively. Also, Sydney Bellamy finished with a career high in kills at 15.

The Converse Valkyries kept things close in set one and took the lead at 9-8. A De Carvalho Peixe kill, assisted by Reed tied up the set and Lander went to take the lead and it wasn't relinquished. The set ended with a score of 25-15. The second set was close as well but began to get out of reach for the Valkyries after a Bellamy kill that had the Bearcats up 16-10, eventually pulling away to victory at 25-13. The last set was completely in the hands of the Bearcats as they never let Converse tie or lead the set. Lander wrapped up the set at 25-10, with a 3-0 triumph.

The Bearcats only had 10 players available today, and Coach Jeff Reynolds elaborated on the fight of his team.

"I couldn't be more proud of our team. We were able to put together back-to-back, complete games today. We were down to just 10 players today due to illness and injuries, so it was great to see everyone come together and compete without excuses. I've been thoroughly impressed with their grit," said Coach Reynolds.

The team comes back home to face Belmont Abbey next Tuesday at 6 pm.
