Box Score 2 GREENWOOD – The Lander baseball team split a doubleheader against USC Aiken on Saturday that featured Marshall Thompson setting the program's single-season strikeout record in game one and a walk-off victory in game two to conclude the season.
The Bearcats conclude the season at 20-19 overall and 16-16 in the PBC while USC Aiken concludes its season at 20-17 overall and 19-14 in the PBC
Thompson cemented himself among the Bearcat greats as he moved into first for the most strikeouts in a single season with 110. Thompson broke the previous record set by Will Jones and his 106 strikeouts in 2016.
Thompson is now third all-time in career strikeouts with 191.
Although getting 11 hits on the day, the Bearcats were only able to plate two runs in the first game of the doubleheader against Aiken. Both those runs came in the bottom of the seventh with the Bearcats down 7-0.
With two runners on base, Bo Richey doubled through the left side to score Bradley Davis while Mike Fitschen sent a fly ball to right field later in the inning to score Ethan Wilder to make it a 7-2 ball game.
Thompson allowed four runs in 5.2 innings with none being credited to him. He also struck out eight Pacers in his time on the mound.
Game two saw the Bearcats keep pace with Aiken till the very end.
Down 2-0 after the top of the third, Davis smashed a double to right field to score Ward Betts from second to make it a 1-0 game while Davis would come around to score later in the inning on a balk to tie the game 2-2 after the third.
Aiken would plate two runs in the top of the sixth on a pair of singles while Justin Wager responded for Lander with a single to center field to score Evan Harold and cut the lead to 4-3.
Lander would tie the game up at 4-4 in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly from Bo Richey to right field to score Davis.
After blanking the Pacers in the eighth and ninth innings, the Bearcats began the bottom of the ninth with a runner on in scoring position after Betts was hit by a pitch and then moved to second on a passed ball. Davis notched his third hit of the game with a walk-off single to center field to score Betts and give Lander a 5-4 victory over Aiken.
After all four runs came in the first seven innings, Carson Schlegel and Praise Thorsen combined for a pair of scoreless innings to close the game out. Thorsen earned his second win of the season, striking out two Pacers in 0.2 innings of work.
