AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Lander volleyball team won the first two sets at Augusta on Friday night, but the Jaguars rallied to earn a 3-2 decision. Set scores were 13-25, 22-25, 25-17, 25-16, 15-13. 

Christina Aguayo and Madilyn Reed both recorded double-doubles on the evening. Aguayo led the Bearcats with 16 kills and added 12 digs, while Reed orchestrated 46 assist and chipped in with 14 digs. Alexa Barral notched 12 kills and Deona Mims followed with 10 of her own. Maddie Reed tallied a team-high 24 digs, while Hallie Huth added 16 and Maddie Moss finished the night with 14 digs.

Barral and Olivia Dow combined for seven kills in a 10-0 first set run for the Bearcats that put Lander ahead 13-3. Augusta could not pull closer than five as Lander took a 1-0 lead on the night. The Bearcats trailed 21-20 in set two before kills from Dow and Aguayo sandwiched around a bad Jaguar set made the score 23-21 Lander. Augusta committed two attack errors to close the set as Lander moved ahead 2-0. 

However, the Jaguars stormed back, building leads of at least 10 points in the third and fourth sets to tie the match at 2-2. Augusta led 10-4 in the fifth set, but the Bearcats rallied with a 7-1 run to tie the set at 11-11. Augusta used a pair of crucial blocks to go up 14-12 and held off Lander's final rally attempt.

Lander travels to USC Aiken Tuesday night for a 6:00 p.m. match.
