Box Score GREENWOOD – Unable to capitalize on three solo shot home runs in the bottom of the fifth, the Lander baseball team fell 7-4 to the Young Harris Mountain Lions at Dolny Stadium Friday evening.
Lander drops to 14-13 overall and 10-11 in the PBC while Young Harris advances to 16-7 overall and 13-5 in the PBC.
Young Harris was first to score, with five of its seven runs coming in the second inning. After a run was scored due to a batter being hit with the bases loaded, Young Harris scored four more with a grand slam to left field to make it an early 5-0 game.
Lander countered in the fifth with three home runs of its own. Leading the inning off, Mason Streater got a hold of a pitch and drove one over the right center field fence for the first run of the game for the Bearcats. Two batters later, Bradley Davis slammed one over the left field fence to make it a 5-2 game. Later in the inning, Roury Glanton sent a pitch for a ride over the left field fence to put Lander down two with the score 5-3.
Young Harris would increase its lead in the seventh on the back of a two-run blast out to right field to put the Mountain Lions up 7-3.
After a walk from Streater and a double from Ethan Wilder, a balk was committed to bring home a run in the ninth to make it 7-4. Lander would not be able to advance any more runners home, as the Blue and Gold fell to Young Harris in the first of three games.
Marshall Thompson started the first five innings while allowing six hits, five runs, four walks and struck out one. He was awarded the loss and moves to 5-3 on the season.
Davis Cunningham pitched the remaining four innings. He allowed two runs on one hit, walked one and struck out two.
Lander and Young Harris return tomorrow for a doubleheader at Dolny Stadium beginning at 1 pm.
