Box Score AMERICUS, GA. – The Lander baseball fell to Georgia Southwestern 8-6 late in the third game of the series between the two teams.
Lander falls to 18-18 overall and 14-15 in the PBC while GSW moves to 16-16 overall and 14-13 in the PBC.
After winning game one of the series 5-1 and game two 7-6, the Bearcats were looking for its first series sweep of the season.
The Hurricanes were the first to score on Monday. Although hitting into a double play with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, the Hurricanes saw a base runner come home from third for the first run of the game.
Lander responded with an RBI single to center field from Bradley Davis to score Ward Betts in the top of the second to tie the game 1-1. GSW countered in the bottom of the inning with runs coming home on a ground out and single to second on back-to-back at-bats. The Hurricanes weren't done scoring, as they planted a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single to advance their lead to 4-1 after the first three innings.
Lander charged back in the fifth inning. Things started to go the Bearcats way after Evan Harold was walked with the bases loaded to make it 4-2 GSW. Justin Wager sent a sac fly to center field to cut the Hurricanes' lead to one run while Betts slapped a single to right field to score two, giving Lander a 5-4 advantage.
While GSW scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth, the Bearcats came right back in the sixth with another sac fly, this time from Mike Fitschen to score Roury Glanton and tie the game 6-6. After a scoreless seventh and top of the eight, the Hurricanes regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run RBI double to left field.
Justin Walker got the start for the Bearcats as he went three innings. Walker allowed four runs, three earned, five hits, two walks and struck out one batter. Praise Thorsen was credited with the loss after allowing two runs on two hits along with two walks and one strikeout.
Lander concludes its season with the USC Aiken Pacers coming to Dolny Stadium on April 23 and 24.
