Box Score 2 GREENWOOD – After winning the first game of the series against Georgia College on Friday, the Lander baseball team split a doubleheader with the Bobcats at Dolny Stadium on Saturday.
Lander is now 16-16 overall and 12-14 in the PBC while Georgia College is 15-14 overall and 13-13 in the PBC.
The Bearcats won the first game of the doubleheader 6-2 while dropping the second game 14-7.
After the Bobcats scored a run on a fielder choice in the top of the third for the first run of the game, Mike Fitschen sent a single to right field in the bottom of the third to score Ethan Wilder to tie the game at 1-1.
Neither side was able to get any runners across until the seventh when Lander exploded for five runs.
After back-to-back singles from Wilder and Bradley Davis put runners on first and second, Bo Richey torched a triple down the right field line to score two. Fitschen singled through the left side to score Richey to make it a 4-1 ballgame for the Bearcats. Mason Streater singled later in the inning to score Fitschen while Justin Wager singled through the left field to drive in the final run of the inning to put Lander up 6-1 after seven innings of action.
Georgia College managed to get one run across in the top of the ninth on a sac-fly but was unable to produce any other runs.
Jack Fox got the start and went six innings while allowing one run on five hits and striking out three. Bryce Jackson was awarded the win. He pitched two scoreless innings and struck out one.
Five Bearcats had multi-hit games against Georgia College in the first game of the doubleheader.
Game two of the doubleheader saw the Bearcats jump out to a 6-1 lead after the first three innings.
Lander scored its first three runs of the game in the second inning. After Evan Harold doubled to right center to begin the inning, Wager doubled down the left field line to score Harold. Later in the inning, Lander used a double steal to score Wager and make 2-0. Davis would ground out to the shortstop later in the inning to allow Ward Betts to score to give Lander a 3-0 lead.
After the Bobcats scored their first run of the game on an RBI single in the top of the third, Harold sent his seventh home run of the season out to left center to put three more runs on the board and give the Bearcats a 6-1 edge.
The fourth saw two runs come across for the Bobcats while Lander pumped out a run of its own after Fitschen doubled to right center to score a run and make it 7-3.
After a scoreless fifth from both teams, things would begin to tilt in Georgia College's favor.
The Bobcats would score 11 runs between the sixth and eighth innings.
After two runs came across in the sixth for Georgia College, the Bobcats would tie the game at 7-7 after scoring two more in the seventh.
Seven runs came across in the eighth with the Bobcats hitting around the order to establish a 14-7 advantage.
The Bearcats would be held scoreless for the last five innings of the ballgame.
Justin Walker started the second game for the Bearcats. He would only go four innings with three runs coming around on four hits and six walks.
Matthew Ellis was awarded the loss after going 0.1 innings with four runs coming around on three hits.
Lander has a non-conference meeting with Wingate on April 14.
