No. 22 Bearcats travel to face Flagler this weekend

GREENWOOD – The No. 22 Lander baseball team begins its month-long road swing with a trip to Flagler to face the Saints on March 6 and 7.

STORYLINES

  • After winning the series against Columbus State, the Bearcats are ranked among the top-25 programs for the first time since 2016.
  • Although falling 10-9 in the first game, Lander came back and won game two 17-4 before wrapping things up with an 11-10 come from behind victory in game 3.
  • The Bearcats are now 7-2 overall and 4-1 in the PBC.
  • Senior Ward Betts leads the squad with 16 hits. He also has four doubles, one triple, two home runs and 11 RBI. Betts is hitting .485 with an OBP of .564 and a slugging percentage of .848.
  • Betts is tied for fifth in the PBC with total hits.
  • Fellow senior Roury Glanton is right behind Betts in hits with 15. Glanton is tied with Betts in doubles with four while having two triples, three home runs and a team-high 12 RBI. Glanton is hitting .395 with an OBP of .478 and a slugging percentage of .842.
  • Glanton is tied for eighth in the PBC for total hits, tied for first in triples, tied for sixth in the PBC for home runs and is tied for seventh in RBI.
  • Both Betts and Glanton are tied for fifth in doubles in the PBC.
  • As a team, Lander is hitting .314, good for third among PBC schools so far this season.
  • The Bearcats have accrued 99 hits, 89 runs, 25 doubles, three triples, 10 home runs and 81 RBI through the first nine games of the season.
  • Lander's 25 doubles are second in the PBC behind North Georgia's 28. North Georgia and Lander are tied for the conference lead in triples with three.
  • Grad Student Marshall Thompson is leading the Bearcats on the mound. Thompson is 3-1 on the year with 20 innings of work. He's only allowed six runs while striking out a team-high 29 batters faced. He has a K per 9 of 13.05 and an ERA of 2.70. Fellow Grad student Justin Walker is second on the team in strikeouts with 26. Walker is 1-0 this season.
  • Thompson is tied for the lead for most wins among PBC pitchers and second in innings pitched. He's also second in the PBC in strikeouts with hitters hitting a collective .200 against him.
  • Lander has only allowed 74 hits, the fifth-lowest in the conference. Claflin has allowed 115 so far this season.
  • The Bearcats have struck out the most batters as a program with 107 so far this season.
  • The Blue and Gold have allowed the fifth lowest number of home runs in the PBC.
  • After the three-game series against Flagler, the Bearcats will travel to face Belmont Abbey for a single game on March 10.
