Box Score AUGUSTA, GA. – The Lander baseball team started its series against the Augusta Jaguars with an 11-5 victory.
The Bearcats advance to 13-7 overall and 9-6 in the PBC while Augusta falls to 3-12 overall and 2-11 in the PBC.
Lander found itself in a 2-0 hole after the first inning where the Jaguars plated two runs on a single to left field.
The Bearcats came ready in the second inning with five runs of their own. The scoring began on a single to left field from junior Walker McDowell that brought home two runs. Grad Student Mike Fitschen brought two more runs across later in the inning with a single to center field while sophomore Landon Dupert doubled to center field to score Fitschen to make it a 5-1 game in favor of Lander.
Lander would get back on the board in the top of the fifth, with three more runs coming home. Redshirt junior Evan Harold started things off with an RBI single to left to bring home a run, while junior Bo Richey brought home Harold with a single to right field later on in the inning. Junior Mason Streater came home to score on an overthrow from the Jaguar catcher trying to throw out Richey stealing second.
The sixth inning saw a two-run home run from Dupert to put Lander up 10-2. The Jaguars plated three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to inch closer to the Bearcats with the score now 10-5.
Lander scored once more in the eighth inning, with Dupert sending another home run on its way to give Lander its 11-5 final score.
Grad student Justin Walker earned his third win of the season after dealing 5.1 innings of work. He struck out five Jaguars while allowing seven hits and two earned runs. Redshirt junior Davis Cunningham picked up his first save of the season after pitching three scoreless innings to close the game out.
Lander and Augusta will move to SRP Park for the remaining two games tomorrow.
