Box Score FLORENCE, S.C – The Lander baseball team had a rough go of things in the first game of its series with the Francis Marion Patriots, as the Bearcats fell 11-1.
Lander drops to 9-5 overall and 5-4 in the PBC while Francis Marion advances to 8-4 overall and 6-4 in the PBC.
The Patriots started the game with runs in the first and second inning to give them a 2-0 advantage. The Bearcats responded in the top of the third with a run from grad student Mike Fitschen, who sailed a fly ball out to right field to score senior Roury Glanton to make it a 2-1 ball game.
Francis Marion would then proceed to score nine unanswered runs against the Bearcats, with five of those coming in the bottom of the seventh.
Getting the start was grad Student Marshall Thompson, who went five innings against the Patriots. He allowed six hits, four runs, three earned, walked three and struck out seven.
Lander and Francis Marion will face each other tomorrow, as the two sides will square off in a doubleheader set for 1 and 4 pm.
