Box Score GREENWOOD - The Lander baseball team took advantage of 12 hits, nine walks and five hit batsmen as the Bearcats beat rival Erskine 13-0 Saturday afternoon at Dolny Stadium.
Lander improved to 2-0, beating the Flying Fleet for the second time in this young season. Erskine fell to 0-2.
Bearcats starting pitcher Marshall Thompson (1-0) tossed six shutout innings. He allowed five hits - all singles - while walking two and striking out six.
Jack Fox qualified for a save for Lander by finishing the game with three shutout innings. He gave up two hits and struck out six, all swinging.
Landon Dennis (0-1) took the loss for the Flying Fleet.
Ward Betts paced the Lander offense, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Mason Streater went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI, Mike Fitschen was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs, and Vincent DeRubeis hit a double and drove in three runs.
Livan Reinoso paced the Erskine offense with two hits.
Lander took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second after Betts singled and then Bradley Davis and DeRubeis walked to load the bases. Matthew Burgess walked to force home the first run, Walker McDowell grounded a two-run single through the left side on an 0-2 pitch, and Roury Glanton hit an RBI single up the middle past the diving second baseman.
The Bearcats increased their lead to 7-0 in the fourth after Fitschen walked, Landon Dupert walked and Streater was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Betts was hit by a pitch to force home one run and DeRubeis followed with a two-run double to left.
Lander added five runs in the fifth, making it 12-0. Glanton walked, stopped at third on Fitschen's double and scored on Dupert's sacrifice fly to right. Streater hit an RBI single to center, Betts singled, Davis was hit by a pitch to load the bases, DeRubeis was hit by a pitch to force home another run, and McDowell reached on an error to score two more.
The Bearcats scored their final run in the eighth when McDowell walked, advanced to second when Fitschen was hit by a pitch, moved to third on Dupert's foul out to right, and scored on Streater's infield single off the pitcher's glove.
