GREENWOOD – The Lander women's tennis team earned their first home win of the season with a 4-3 victory over visiting Emmanuel on Friday.
Lander moves to 2-0 overall while Emmanuel drops to 0-2 overall.
The Bearcats started off winning the doubles point 2-1. Senior Maria Rey and sophomore Roberta Armani won 6-3 at the no. 2 doubles spot while senior Lindsey Wiggins and Kayleigh Hahn won 6-3 at the no. 3 doubles spot to clinch the first point of the match.
Lander went up 2-0 after Hahn won in two sets 6-3,6-1 at the no. 4 singles spot before Emmanuel would get its first point at the no. 6 singles spot. Redshirt senior Eduarda Ferreira made it 3-1 with a 6-3,6-2 victory at the no. 1 singles spot. The Lions extended the match with a win at the no. 2 singles spot, but that wouldn't be able to save them, as freshman Chiara Gerbino clinched the win with a three-set victory, winning 6-2,2-6,6-3 to make it 4-2. Emmanuel earned a win at the no. 5 singles spot to make it a 4-3 match.
The Bearcats are back in action tomorrow, as they host not only Newberry but also Savannah State.
