Box Score GREENWOOD - The Lander baseball team dropped a non-conference mid-week game to Wingate, 8-3, on Tuesday afternoon at Dolny Stadium.
Lander fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first, but evened the score when Landon Dupert lifted a fly ball to right field to score Walker McDowell from third.
Wingate plated another run in the top of the second to move in front, then used a three-run fifth inning to build a 5-1 lead. Mason Streater laced a two-out single into left field to drive in Dupert in the bottom of the fifth to trim the Bearcat deficit to 5-2.
After the Bulldogs added two runs in the top of the seventh, Gary Garrett pulled Lander within four when he scored on a throwing error off a Bradley Davis grounder. However, the Bearcats could not get closer as Wingate tacked on an insurance run in the top of the eighth.
Marshall Thompson took the loss for Lander, allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts in 1.0 inning of relief. The Bearcats used nine pitchers in predetermined splits.
Lander will return to conference play on Friday as they travel to Augusta at 6:00 p.m.
