Men's basketball gets set to host Johnson C. Smith and Livingstone this weekend in the Lander Classic

GREENWOOD – After an impressive win at Claflin on November 29, the Lander men's basketball returns home to host the Lander Classic this weekend.

STORYLINES

  • The Bearcats are coming off an 80-58 win at Claflin.
  • Five players for Lander scored in double figures, with DaJuan Moorer leading all scorers with 16 points. Moorer also had six rebounds and one block to go with his 6-of-6 day from the field.
  • Jared Sherfield had six rebounds to go with his seven assists, two steals and three points.
  • Dominic Stanford, Zane Rankin, Nigel Colvin and Tommy Moore all joined Moorer in double figures for scoring.
  • As a team, the Bearcats shot 53.8 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from beyond the arc.
  • This is the first time Lander has scored 70 or more points and won a game. They are 1-2 in those games, with the first two contests of the season featuring an 83-78 loss to Southern Wesleyan and a 76-71 loss in overtime to Anderson.
  • So far this season, Lander is averaging 68.5points per game while allowing just 65.7 points.
  • Those 65.7 points allowed per game are the second-fewest allowed by a PBC team so far this season. North Georgia is holding opponents to 64.3 points per game through seven contests.
  • Lander also has the third-best shooting defense, holding opponents to a shooting percentage of 40.8 percent.
  • Deandre Robinson and Colvin continue to lead the Bearcats in scoring with 13.5 and 10.3 points per game. Rankin is close to averaging double figures in scoring, as he's averaging 9.2 points per game.
  • Sherfield leads the Bearcats with 6.5 rebounds per game and 3.2 assists per game. Both Moorer and DeShundre Rucker are averaging over a block per game this season, as Moorer leads the team with 1.6 blocks per game while Rucker is close behind with 1.5
  • Johnson C. Smith is coming into the Lander Classic at 2-3 on the season.
  • The Golden Bulls most recently lost to Queens on November 27, falling 85-83.

  • Livingstone is averaging 87 points per game while allowing 86 per game.
  • Navar Elmore leads the Blue Bears in scoring with 18 points per game. Arion Broadnax, Cameron Carpenter and Deshone Hicks are all averaging double figures in scoring this season as well.
  • Elmore is the team's leading rebounder with 8.7 per game, Hicks leads Livingstone in assists with 2.3 per game and Carpenter leads the team with 2.5 steals. The Blue Bears are led in blocks by Elmore's 1.7 blocks per game.
  • Lander remains home after the Lander Classic to host Claflin on Dec. 11.
