Men's basketball looks to keep winning streak going with a visit from Claflin on Saturday

GREENWOOD – After going 2-0 in the Lander Classic with wins over Johnson C. Smith and Livingstone this past weekend, the Lander men's basketball team looks to increase its winning streak with a visit from Claflin on Saturday.

STORYLINES

  • The Bearcats are coming off a 75-64 victory over Livingstone to close out the Lander Classic
  • DaJuan Moorer led all scorers with 19 pts after going 9-of-12 from the field. Moorer also added six rebounds and three assists.
  • Lander had four players reach double figures in scoring, as Zane Rankin, Dominic Stanford and Martin Vogts all joined Moorer.
  • The Bearcats went 2-0 last weekend with an impressive 93-64 win against Johnson C. Smith to begin the Lander Classic.
  • After beginning the year 1-4 which saw three straight defeats, the Bearcats have turned things around and sit with a 4-4 record.
  • All four of the Bearcats wins this season have been by 11 or more points while all four of the losses have been by five or fewer.
  • This will be the second meeting between Lander and Claflin this season.
  • The Bearcats defeated Claflin 80-58 on the road on Nov. 29.
  • Moorer led Lander with 16 points while going 6-of-6 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.
  • Five Bearcats were in double figures for scoring in that contest. Along with Moorer, Stanford, Rankin, Nigel Colvin and Tommy Moore all reached double figures.
  • The 80 points Lander put up against Claflin is currently the second most the Bearcats have scored this season while the 58 points allowed are the second-fewest.
  • During their three-game winning streak, the Bearcats have averaged 82 points per game.
  • The Bearcats currently have the third-best scoring defense among PBC teams, with just 65.3 points allowed per game. Augusta holds the top-scoring offense with 89.6 points per game and the best scoring defense with just 61.0 points allowed per game.
  • Lander ranks 37th in the nation in scoring defense.
  • Lander currently has three players averaging double figures in scoring this season. Deandre Robinson leads the way with 13.5 points per game while Colvin with 11.8 and  Rankin with 10.5 are close behind.
  • Jared Sherfield currently leads the Bearcats in rebounds per game with 6.5 and assists per game with 3.6.
  • Vogts is the team leader in steals per game with 1.6 while Moorer leads the Bearcats in blocks per game with 1.6.
  • Claflin comes into this contest with a 2-6 record overall and a 1-0 record in the CIAA.
  • The Panthers won their last game 92-63 against Shaw to begin CIAA action.
  • Claflin used a 52-32 lead at the half to create separation from Shaw.
  • Those 92 points were a season-high for Claflin.
  • The Panthers also had a season-high five blocks and 20 assists against the Bears.
  • Donell Frayer Jr. led the Panthers in scoring 2ith 26 points. He went 8-of-11 from the field and 8-of-10 from beyond the arc.
  • Claflin held Shaw to 1-of-12 from 3-point range (8.3%) for the game.
  • So far this season, Claflin is averaging 64.9 points per game, good for a -6.9-scoring margin
  • Frayer Jr. currently leads Claflin in scoring with 15.2 points per game. Isaiah Jennings (13.7) and Allen Hatchett (11.0) join Frayer in double figures in scoring.
  • Hatchett leads the way in rebounds per game with 4.9, Romero Hill is the team's leader in assists with 4.4 and steals with 1.4. Ty'rek Priestley is the Panther's leader in blocks per game with 1.0 per game.
  • The Bearcats play their first conference game of the season when they welcome Columbus State to Horne Arena on Dec. 17.
