Men's soccer looks to rebound with a trip to GSW on Saturday

GREENWOOD – The Lander men's soccer hits the road for the final time in the regular season as it faces Georgia Southwestern on Saturday.

STORYLINES

  • The Bearcats are coming off a 3-2 defeat to Clayton State.
  • The Lakers scored the first three goals before Lander responded with goals in the 66th and 67th minutes of play.
  • Tom Marriott and Max McNulty were the goal scorers. Marriott converted a penalty kick for his 12th goal of the season while McNulty laced a long-range shot for his 10th goal of the season. Marriott also picked up an assist of McNulty's goal, bringing his career total in points up to 84.
  • Marriott is in the top-10 for career points among active Div. II players. Sergio Diaz from Post leads the way with 135 career points.
  • Marriott is also among the top-15 in career goals scored with 29.
  • For the first time since losing to Anderson and Young Harris on October 16 and 19 in the 2019 season, the Bearcats have dropped back-to-back contests.
  • This marks the first loss to Clayton State for the Bearcats since falling 2-0 in 2014.
  • Going into Saturday, the Bearcats are in third place with 15 points in conference play.
  • Lander is guaranteed post-season action, but where they'll be playing its first game is yet to be determined.
  • With the departure of Francis Marion, the top-two teams will now earn automatic byes into the semifinals while the No. 4,5,6 and 7 seeds will battle in the quarterfinals.
  • Marriott, who leads the team in goals (13), assists (9) and points (35), has scored the second-most goals since 2010 when Clement Dauchy scored 16 in 2013.
  • McNulty, who's second on the team in goals with 10, has set a new career-high for goals scored in a single season. His previous high was eight in 2019. McNulty also ranks second on the team in points with 22.
  • Kevin Rubaszewski and Marco Gueli are tied for third on the squad in points with 14 each. Rubaszewski has four goals and six assists while Gueli has three goals and eight assists.
  • As a team, the Bearcats continue to be ranked in the top-20 in numerous categories in Div. II. Lander is currently 10th in assists per game (2.57), 16th in points per game (7.71), 20th in scoring offense (2.57), 6th for total assists (36), 11th in total goals (36) and 10th in total points (108).
  • The Bearcat's 36 goals are the second-most in the PBC while their 23 goals allowed are the third-fewest in the conference. GSW has allowed the second-fewest goals among PBC teams this season with just 20 goals against. 
  • The Hurricanes however have only scored 18 goals, the second-fewest in the conference.
  • Marriott's 13 goals put him second among PBC scorers, with Matteo Costa of Flagler putting up 15 goals on the season. Costa also leads the nation in goals scored.
  • GSW is currently 6-6-1 on the season. The Hurricanes most recently fell to No. 4 Young Harris on Wednesday 2-1 in overtime.
  • Chirs Salamatou is the Hurricanes' leading goal scorer with four on the year. He and Jack Malleret lead GSW in points with nine.
  • Mauricio Uribe has played and started 10 games this season for GSW. He's allowed 15 goals with a GAA of 1.45. Making 30 saves on the season, he holds a 5-4-1 record with two shutouts.
  • GSW picked up their first-ever win over the Bearcats the last time they faced Lander on October 2. GSW won 2-1 in overtime.
  • Lander holds a 16-1-2 overall record against the Hurricanes.
  • Lander returns home for the final week of the regular season next Wednesday as it battles North Georgia on October 27.
