Men's soccer looks to stay hot at home - hosts GSW on Saturday

GREENWOOD – The Lander men's soccer team is looking to finish the week on a high note with a visit from Georgia Southwestern on Saturday.

STORYLINES

  • The Bearcats are coming off a 4-0 win against Clayton State this past Wednesday.
  • Max Bolton scored his first two goals of the season to lead the scoring charge against the Lakers. Tom Marriott scored his 10th goal off a well-placed free-kick while also contributing an assist. Marco Gueli was credited with three assists on the night.
  • Jacob Withers made five saves in his first start of the season. He now has 24 career shutouts, which leads all active Div. II goalkeepers.
  • Mariott leads the Bearcats in goals (10) and points (26). Along with Marriott, two other Bearcats have 10 or more points this season. Max McNulty has 16 points on seven goals and two assists while Gueli has 13 points on three goals and the team-high in assists with seven.
  • Marriott is currently tied for the most goals in the PBC and nation with Matteo Costa of Flagler.
  • Gueli is currently tied for third in the nation in total assists while Marriott is tied for fifth. Kevin Rubaszewski is in the top-15 for total assists in the nation with his five assists.
  • As a team, the Bearcats lead the PBC and the nation in total goals with 28.
  • Lander has allowed the third-fewest goals in the PBC with 13. GSW is second with 10 while Young Harris has allowed just five goals.
  • Along with leading the PBC and Div. II in goals, the Bearcats hold the same honor for total assists with 29. Notre Dame (OH) is second with 26 on the season.
  • The Bearcats are also ranked seventh in scoring offense in Div. II with 3.11 goals scored per game.
  • The Bearcats are 16-0-2 all-time against GSW. In the last five contests, Lander has won all five and outscored the Hurricanes 17-1 in that span.
  • Since losing to Anderson 3-1 on October 16, 2019, the Bearcats have gone 11-0-1 at Van Taylor Stadium. At home this season, Lander is 3-0 and has outscored opponents 14-0.
  • Just counting their home games, the Bearcats have scored the same number or more goals as 135 Div. II teams so far this season.
  • GSW comes into this contest with an overall record of 3-4-1 while spotting a 1-3-1 record in the conference.
  • The Hurricanes' lone conference win of the season came against USC Aiken on September 18. They won 1-0 on the road.
  • GSW is currently lead by Chris Salamatou's three goals. He also leads the team with seven points. Seven Hurricanes are tied for second with one goal each. Jack Malleret is first on the squad in assists with three.
  • Mauricio Uribe and Oneil Lewis have both seen time in net for GSW. Lewis has played and started three games. He's allowed five goals while making nine saves. He has a 1-2-0 record. Uribe has played and started in five games for the Hurricanes. He's allowed five goals while making 15 saves. He's 2-2-1 on the season with two shutouts.
  • The Bearcats travel to Flagler on October 6 before getting a break next Saturday.
