Box Score GREENWOOD – The Lander baseball team got home runs from Josh Gregory, Evan Harold, Justin Wager, and Mike Fitschen as the Bearcats beat Augusta 20-1 Sunday afternoon at Dolny Stadium.
Lander won the Peach Belt Conference series after splitting the first two games with the Jaguars, improving to 9-4 overall and 4-1 in the PBC. Augusta fell to 2-10, 1-5.
It was the first time the Bearcats had scored 20 or more runs since March 22-23, 2016, when Lander scored 22 and 24 runs on consecutive days versus Claflin and Anderson.
Carson Schlegel was the winning pitcher for the Bearcats, improving to 4-0. Schlegel allowed only one run on five hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked no one.
Jackson Bryant and Marshall Thompson each pitched a scoreless inning for Lander.
Jaguars starting pitcher John Micah Law (0-2) took the loss.
Gregory was 2-for-6 with a home run and five RBI. Roury Glanton went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI, including three RBI singles.
Wager went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer, three runs scored and four RBI. Harold was 2-for-4 with a homer, three RBI and three runs scored.
Fitschen was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer and three runs scored. Matthew Burgess went 3-for-5 with a double and three runs scored. Jordan Gibert also scored twice.
Lander got off to a quick start, scoring four in the first. Burgess hit a leadoff double down the left-field line, stopped at third on Fitschen's hard single to right, and scored on Glanton's single to center. Gregory followed with a three-run homer to right-center, his third blast of the season.
Augusta cut it to 4-1 in the top of the second when Mason Robertson doubled and scored on a single by Carrington Evans.
The Bearcats made it 6-1 in the bottom of the second when Burgess walked, and Harold hit a two-run homer to left-center. It was his seventh homer of the season. He began the afternoon tied for the PBC lead in homers.
Lander increased its lead to 10-1 in the fourth. Wager walked, Harold reached on an error, Fitschen was hit by a pitch, and Glanton singled home one run. Another run scored when Colton Yeager reached on a dropped fly ball, and then Gregory added a two-run single.
The Bearcats added two in the fifth when Burgess singled, stopped at second on Harold's infield single, and scored on Glanton's single. Harold scored when Yeager reached on an error, making it 12-1.
Lander scored twice more in the sixth when Harold lifted a sacrifice fly, and Glanton was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Wager hit a three-run homer in the seventh, his second of the season. It was initially ruled a two-run double with Wager being thrown out at third base. But the ball hit the top of the fence, and the call was changed to a homer.
Kyle Jenkins singled to right and Fitschen followed with a two-run homer, his second in two days.
Wager added a run-scoring single in the eighth, making it 20-1.
The Bearcats will be back in action on Tuesday when they go on the road to face Newberry. First pitch is set for 6:00 pm.
