GREENWOOD – The Lander baseball team fell to No. 15 Newberry 18-9 on Tuesday night at Stephen B. Dolny Stadium.

Newberry moves to 8-0 on the year while Lander falls to 5-3.

Newberry's Quinton Driggers earned his second win of the season on the mound with 2.1 innings, as he only gave one run, one hit, one walk, and struck out three. Starting pitcher Brandon Childers was charged with the loss, as he yielded four runs in 1.2 innings.

Newberry plated four runs in the top of the second, but Evan Harold cracked a two-run homer in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit in half.

The Wolves answered with four more runs in the top of the fourth and tacked on another in the fifth to take a 9-2 lead. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Lander loaded the bases. A Roury Glanton single brought home two runs, and Josh Gregory cleared the bases in the next at-bat with a three-run blast over the right-field wall.

The teams traded runs in the sixth as Justin Wager answered a Newberry run with a solo shot to make the score 10-8. However, the Wolves responded with eight runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach. Lander's final run of the night came off a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth.

Josh Gregory led the Bearcats at the plate with a 2-for-4 outing, with a home run and three RBI.

Lander opens Peach Belt Conference play this weekend as the Bearcats head to Orangeburg for a three-game series at Claflin.
