GREENWOOD – The Lander women's lacrosse faced a one-goal deficit with 2:30 remaining in regulation on Saturday afternoon, but Mary Claire Robinson netted a game-tying goal with 1:53 to go and Alyssa Suchan slotted a game-winner with 47 seconds left in overtime to give the Bearcats a 13-12 win over Newberry, the first in program history, in front of 195 fans at Van Taylor Stadium.
Lander (1-0) four saves from Brenah Sarell in the second half and held the Wolves (0-1) without a shot in overtime. With time winding down in the extra period, Suchan fired a low shot that skipped inside the far post to give the Bearcats the victory.
"There's not a better way to start a program," said head coach Bob Dachille following the win. "To be faced with such adversity, for the girls to trust everything we've been doing, and come out of the timeout in overtime and do exactly what we asked of them, not a better way to start a program than what our girls did today. I couldn't be prouder of them."
Robinson led the Bearcat attack with five goals on six shots, including the program's first goal with 28:49 left in the first half. Neither team ever led by more than two, as Lander built its largest lead with three consecutive goals late in the first half. Robinson scored her second at the 10:22 mark and followed with another with 5:23 left in the half. Suchan's goal with 4:40 remaining in the half put the Bearcats up 8-6.
In the second half, Kasey Bronco broke a 10-10 tie with a goal at the 13:11 mark. Lander held the lead until the 3:34 mark of the half, when Newberry's Marissa Plumer netted two goals in 64 seconds to put the Wolves up 12-11.
Lander converted all 15 of its clear attempts and limited the Wolves to 11 shots in the second half.
The Bearcats travel to Southern Wesleyan next Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
