Lander splits DH against Young Harris as Jenkins records four hits

GREENWOOD – The Lander baseball team got four hits from Kyle Jenkins in Game 2 Saturday while Joseph Whitt had a strong game on the mound as the Bearcats beat Young Harris 14-2, salvaging a Peach Belt Conference double-header split at Dolny Stadium.

The Mountain Lions won Saturday's double-header opener, 7-3, to clinch the PBC series after also winning 12-9 on Friday.

Lander is 5-6 overall, 1-2 in the Peach Belt.

Young Harris is 6-5, 2-1.

Jenkins was 4-for-5 with a home run, three runs scored and three RBI in Game 2. He also had three hits on Friday.

Nathan Schreckengost and Colton Yeager added three hits apiece for the Bearcats, who collected 16 hits in Game 2. Schreckengost paced Lander with five hits in the double-header.

The Mountain Lions grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning of Game 2 when Dahlton Cash hit an RBI single and scored on a double-play grounder.

But Lander came out swinging in the bottom of the second, grabbing a 6-2 lead. Yeager started the rally with a single, moved to second when Josh Gregory walked, and scored on Peter Bocchino's single.

Tim Kranz walked to load the bases, Bailey Connell hit a run-scoring single and Jenkins walked to force in the go-ahead run. Schreckengost reached on an RBI infield single with a second run scoring on that play due to an errant throw. Yeager's second single of the inning plated the sixth run.

The Bearcats increased their lead to 7-2 in the fourth when Jenkins hit his first homer of the year, the second of his college career. The sophomore hit the first pitch over the fence in left.

Lander put the game away with five runs in the sixth. Connell and Jenkins started the inning with singles, Fitschen hit an RBI single, Schreckengost singled to load the bases, Yeager added an RBI single, Gregory walked to force home a run, Bocchino reach on an error to score a run, and Kranz delivered an RBI single making it 12-2.

The Bearcats tacked on a run in the seventh as Fitschen singled, moved to second on a passed ball, and scored on Schreckengost's single to left.

Lander added a run in the eighth when Bocchino was hit by a pitch, stopped at second when Ward Betts walked, and scored on a single by Jenkins.

Whitt (2-1) tossed seven solid innings for the Bearcats, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out seven and walking only one. Marshall Thompson and Justin Walker each pitched a scoreless inning out of the Lander bullpen. Thompson fanned two in the eighth while Walker struck out the side in the ninth.

Young Harris starting pitcher Kyle Turner (0-2) took the loss, lasting only 1.1 innings. The Mountain Lions used six more pitchers in Game 2.

The Bearcats took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of Saturday's opener when Fitschen was hit by a pitch, moved to third on Schreckengost's single, and scored on a wild pitch.

Young Harris tied it in the sixth when Brett Jackson walked, moved to second on a single by Jackson Jones, stopped at third on Bailey Campbell's single, and scored when Cash reached on an error.

The Mountain Lions took a 5-1 lead in the top of the eighth on Cash's two-run double, Tristin Smith's RBI double and an infield error.

Lander pulled within 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth. Zack Moore doubled down the left-field line and scored on Vincent Addona's double down the right-field line. Connell's single to left plated Addona.

Campbell's two-out, two-run double in the top of the ninth gave Young Harris a 7-3 advantage.

The Bearcats stranded two runners in a scoreless bottom of the ninth.

Lander's Davis Cunningham, who took a two-hit shutout into the sixth, gave up one run on four hits while striking out five and walking one in 5.1 innings. Ryan Flores (0-1) escaped a bases-loaded jam in the sixth but allowed two runs in the eighth to take the loss. Robbie Hoyt gave up two more runs in the eighth and Bryce Jackson two in the ninth.

Young Harris starting pitcher Dylan Gibeau (1-2) earned the win. McLain Harris picked up his third save of the season.
