INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Lander wrestling team competed in its final tournament of 2019 over the weekend at the Midwest Classic hosted by the University of Indianapolis. Lander put nine wrestlers on the mat for the weekend.
The Bearcats had their top finisher in the 133 pound division as William Olivas won two times in the consolation rounds. After falling in the second round of the championship round, Olivas pinned Jake Byrd of Drury in the second round of the consolation bracket. He then earned a 6-5 decision over Maryville's Alex Waggoner before bowing out in the fourth round.
Other notable performances included Myles Starke at 174 pounds, who won twice. Starke advanced to the championship round with a 16-4 major decision over Christian Carney of Ouachita Baptist, then rebounded from a loss with a 6-2 decision over Ohio Valley's Hunter Moore in the consolation bracket.
Cameron Coffman at 285 pounds also picked up a pair of wins including an opening round 8-6 decision over David Henson of Tiffin. He dropped his next match and then won 14-2 over Lake Erie's Devin Uzelac.
Angel Hernandez earned a consolation round win in the 165 pound division with an 8-2 decision over Dallas Miles of Kentucky Wesleyan, while Ryan Humel won his opening match 8-4 over King's Isaah Perez in the 184 pound division. Darius Parker picked up a 3-2 victory over Ivan Balavage of Newman in the first round of the championship bracket in the 197 pound division.
