Wrestling debuts at Georgia Open as Holt wins tournament title

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – The Lander wrestling team grabbed one tournament title and three second-place finishes in the progrm's first ever competition at the Georgia Open on Saturday. 16 different Bearcats competed in the event.

"I'm really proud of the effort," said head coach R.C. LaHaye. "In these early season tournaments, that's mainly what you're looking for and all of our guys fought really hard today."

Brandon Holt captured the championship at 133, going 5-0 with a major decision and a tech fall. Myles Starke placed second at 184, along with Darius Parker at 197 and Cameron Coffman at 285. Angel Hernandez went 3-1 with two tech falls at 165 to earn third place in the field.

Brice Harkness won the consolation championship at 165 while Jordan Whalen advanced to the quarterfinals of the 141 field. Ryan Humel also made the quarterfinals at 184.

Lander returns to action next Saturday at the UNCP Classic.
