Bearcats end season with pair of losses in PBC Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PALATKA, Fla. – The eighth-seeded Lander baseball team saw its season come to an end on Saturday as the Bearcats dropped contests against fifth-seeded North Georgia and No. 17-ranked and fourth-seeded UNC Pembroke in pool play at the Peach Belt Conference Tournament at St. John's River State College.

Lander (16-35) fell to North Georgia (31-21) 11-4 in the morning before dropping a 7-2 decision to UNC Pembroke (38-12) in the afternoon.

A three-run homer from Nathan Schreckengost put Lander up on the Nighthawks in the top of the first inning before Jake Arnold answered with a three-run shot of his own in the bottom of the second to tie the game.

Arnold's home run would open the North Georgia offense, as the Nighthawks posted 10 runs over a span of five innings to build a 10-4 lead. Lander's only answer came in the form of a leadoff home run from Alex Conaway in the top of the sixth. The Nighthawks' Bill LeRoy drove in an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to give UNG an 11-4 advantage.

Derrick Pickvet (4-5) earned the win for North Georgia, allowing four runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Chris Sheehan (4-7) took the loss after allowing 10 runs on 11 hits in 5.2 innings with one walk and six strikeouts.

Against UNCP, the Bearcats fell behind 7-0 before finally getting on the board in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run from Brice Kirven and a fielder's choice from Colton Yeager that allowed Bo Richey to score.

The Braves put the game out of reach with four runs over the final two innings. UNC Pembroke hit five home runs in the game, including two from Ethan Baucom.

Joseph Whitt (1-4) was tagged with the loss, surrendering seven runs on eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 3.2 innings. UNCP's Landen Smith (4-1) picked up the win after allowing two runs on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work.
