Lander wins 10-3 behind Sheehan, completes PBC sweep over Francis Marion

Box Score

GREENWOOD – Mike Fitschen, Zack Moore and Luke Johnson had three hits apiece as the Lander Bearcats completed their first Peach Belt Conference sweep over Francis Marion since 2001, beating the Patriots 10-3 Sunday afternoon at Dolny Stadium.

Lander earned its fourth consecutive victory, improving to 10-18 overall and 4-11 in the PBC. The Bearcats also beat Francis Marion 14-6 Friday and 4-3 Saturday.

Lander banged out 14 hits Sunday and scored in five consecutive innings from the second through the sixth.

The Patriots fell to 12-19, 5-13.

Starting pitcher Chris Sheehan (1-4) earned his first win in a Bearcats uniform. The graduate transfer from Wofford College allowed three runs on six hits while striking out five and walking two in six innings of work.

Lander's JD Cook worked the final three innings for his first save of the season. He tossed three shutout innings, striking out five.

Garrett Wilson (0-2) took the loss for Francis Marion.

"I thought we did a good job of scoring five innings in a row there in the middle," said head coach Jason Burke, "and that really relaxed Chris. He started off the game really well, got into some trouble in the middle innings, but when you're scoring and putting the pressure on them, it'll help your pitcher settle. We played pretty good defense today and JD Cook looked the best he's looked all year."

Moore, who drove in the game-winning run as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the 10th inning on Saturday, had three hits in five at-bats on Sunday. He drove in two and scored two.

Fitschen went 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored, and Johnson was also 3-for-5 with two RBI.

Bailey Connell was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Bearcats, Conner Davis continued his hot hitting going 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Carson Jones was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.

Gage Taylor led the Patriots, going 3-for-5 with an RBI. Patrick Jackson and William Robbins added two hits apiece for the visitors.

Lander took a 3-0 lead in the second with Jones walking and Fitschen hitting a single to start the rally. Moore delivered an RBI single to right and after Davis executed a sacrifice bunt to put a second runner into scoring position, Johnson hit a two-run single to left.

Francis Marion pulled within 3-2 in the top of the third when Jackson singled, Peyton Creech hit an RBI triple, and Taylor plated a run with a ground out.

Jones and Fitschen started another Bearcat rally in the bottom of the third. Jones walked again and scored on Fitschen's double to left. Moore followed with his second RBI single of the day, making it 5-2. Davis and Johnson singled to load the bases, but the Patriots escaped further damage with a double play.

Lander added a run in the fourth when Colton Yeager and Nathan Schreckengost walked, and Jones smacked an RBI single.

The Bearcats added another run in the fifth to make it 7-2. Johnson struck out but reached first on a wild pitch, moved to second on Connell's walk, and scored when Yeager reached on a dropped fly ball in center.

Francis Marion pulled within 7-3 in the top of the sixth on a solo homer by Robbins.

Lander increased its advantage to 10-3 in the bottom of the sixth with three more runs. Fitschen and Moore singled, Davis hit an RBI single, and Connell added a run-scoring double.
