Moore's game-winning hit gives baseball PBC series victory over Francis Marion

Box Score

GREENWOOD – Pinch hitter Zack Moore's single scored Kyle Jenkins in the bottom of the 10th inning, giving the Lander Bearcats their first Peach Belt Conference series win of the season as they beat Francis Marion University 4-3 Saturday afternoon at Dolny Stadium.

Following Friday's 14-6 victory, Lander clinched the series Saturday and improved to 9-18 overall and 3-11 in the PBC.

The Patriots fell to 12-18, 5-12.

"I thought our guys missed some opportunities early," said head coach Jason Burke, "but they stayed confident and stayed with the appraoch. Kyle Jenkins got that big double to lead off the 10th and then Zack Moore coming in off the bench cold and hitting that ball hard off the third baseman was really cool to see."

The Bearcats played in front of their largest crowd of the season Saturday as 359 was the official attendance for "Stand Up to Cancer Day." Lander baseball raised over $700 dollars for cancer research and treatment during the game.

The series concludes Sunday with a scheduled start of 1 p.m., weather permitting.

Freshman outfielder Jenkins led off the 10th with a shot into the left-fielder corner, his first career double at Lander. Moore singled past the third baseman on a 2-1 pitch, and Jenkins scored without a throw.

The hit made a winner out of Bearcats relief pitcher Alex Moore (1-2), who tossed two shutout innings. Christian Umphlet (3-3) took the loss for Francis Marion.

Jenkins, Mike Fitschen and Conner Davis led Lander with two hits apiece. Davis, who converted from pitcher to outfielder this season, has five hits in the two games against the Patriots.

Gage Taylor, William Robbins, Patrick Jackson and Steven Cox had two hits apiece for the visitors.

Each team scored one run in the first inning. Alex Griffith had an RBI single for Francis Marion while the Bearcats' Colton Yeager doubled and scored on Fitschen's single to tie it. It was Fitschen's team-leading 18th RBI.

Lander grabbed a 3-1 lead in the fourth after Luke Johnson singled and stopped at third on Davis's third double of the series. Vincent Addona hit a two-out, routine grounder, but the Patriots second baseman's throw pulled the first baseman off the bag, allowing Addona to reach safely and enabling both Johnson and Davis to score.

The Patriots tied the game at 3-all in the fifth when Taylor and Cox singled, each moved up a base on Cj Mackinson's sacrifice bunt, and both scored on a single by Robbins.

Francis Marion threatened in the top of the seventh when Taylor and Jackson led off with singles. Bearcats starting pitcher Joseph Whitt recorded the first out on a fielder's choice, then Ryan Troutman entered in relief and induced an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play ball off the bat of Mackinson.

The game remained tied until Moore's game-winner in the 10th.

Lander starting pitcher Whitt scatted 12 hits in 6.1 innings of work but allowed only three runs. Francis Marion's Evan Flynn also allowed three runs but just one earned on eight hits.
