Box Score PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Lander baseball team fell behind 8-0 to No. 21 UNC Pembroke after four innings and cound not rally as the Braves earned a 14-6 win in the second game of the Peach Belt Conference series.
Lander (5-7, 1-4 PBC) managed six runs over the final five innings, but could not survive a three-inning stretch that saw UNCP (10-1, 4-1 PBC) plate 13 runs.
Trailing 8-0 entering the top of the fifth, the Bearcats cut the deficit in half on a two-run homer from Bailey Connell, an RBI double from Colton Yeager and an RBI single from Mike Fitschen. However, UNC Pembroke answered with four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to stretch the lead to 12-4.
The Braves tacked on additional runs in the sixth and eighth innings to build a 14-4 lead entering the ninth.
Vincent Addona singled home a pair of Bearcats in the top of the ninth, but Lander could manage nothing else as UNCP claimed the series.
JD Cook (1-3) took the loss for Lander, allowing six earned runs on 12 hits in 4.0 innings.
UNCP's Landen Smith (1-0) earned the win, striking out nine and allowing four runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings of work.
Offensively, Addona led the Bearcats with a 3-for-5 day at the plate.
