Bearcats defeat rival Erskine behind high-flying offensive attack

Box Score

GREENWOOD – George Barmby and Sia Jamedar each netted two goals, while Jordan Skelton scored one goal and assisted on another as the Lander men's soccer team tallied its 10th consecutive win at home in a 4-0 victory over rival Erskine at Van Taylor Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Bearcats (2-1) earned their third straight win over the Flying Fleet and their largest margin of victory in the rivaly since a 6-0 win in 2007. Lander drew 498 fans on the night, the third-largest crowd in program history.

"We managed to get the goal early," said head coach Lee Squires, "which was nice and settled us down. We're trying to find that consistency. There was a period in the first half where we dropped our intensity, which wasn't good. That second goal just before halftime helped and then it was just about our approach and our mentality in the second half. We had the mentality and the drive to go get the third, the fourth and, in the end, the fifth goal."

Barmby's goal in the 11th minute proved to be all Lander would need against Erskine (1-2). Skelton's long pass found the feet of the freshman and Barmby turned the corner in the box and rolled a shot past Erskine goalkeper Mikael Varin. Lander tacked on its second goal of the half at the 39:09 mark when Sia Jamedar headed home a cross from Thibault Chretien

The Bearcats continued the scoring outburst in the second half, as Skelton scored his third goal of the year on a spectacular header from Oliver Brock's corner kick. Barmby found the back of the net again at the 55:45 mark with his second goal of the evening off a breakaway assist from Sam Lofts. Jamedar capped the scoring on a goal from Robbie Young's corner kick in the 89th minute.

The Lander defense held Erskine scoreless for the third consecutive season, limiting the Flying Fleet to just three shots on the evening. Erskine last scored against Lander in a 3-2 loss in 2014. The match marked the fifth time in the Bearcats' 10-match home winning streak that Lander shut out an opponent.

The Bearcats return to action on Saturday with a trip to Tusculum to face the Pioneers at 3:00 p.m.
