Box Score GREENWOOD – Logan Mattix hit two home runs while the Peach Belt Conference's top slugger Brandon Benson added a three-run shot, helping Georgia College complete a three-game PBC sweep over the Lander Bearcats 15-2 Sunday afternoon at Dolny Stadium.
Lander fell to 17-21 overall, 10-11 in the PBC.
The Bobcats improved to 25-9, (12-6).
Georgia College took a 2-0 lead in the first when Benson doubled ahead of Mattix's two-run homer.
Lander pulled within 2-1 in the second when Carson Jones hit a solo homer, his seventh of the year.
The Bobcats scored four times in the top of the third for a 6-1 lead. Wesley Wommack hit an RBI single, Nate Schmal lifted a sacrifice fly to left, and Clayten Ayres and Brendan Holler added run-scoring singles.
The Bearcats added a run in the bottom of the third when Colton Yeager singled, moved to third on Alex Conaway's single, and scored on Bailey Connell's sacrifice fly into the left-field corner.
Georgia College expanded its lead to 9-2 in the top of the fourth. Cal Gentry and Brandon Purcell walked, and Benson followed with a three-run homer to left. It was Benson's Peach Belt-leading 18th of the season.
Mattix hit his second two-run homer of the game in the sixth, increasing the Bobcat lead to 11-2. It was his 12th homer of the season. Georgia College added two more runs in the inning when Wommack and Schmal singled, followed by a run-scoring error and a Phillip Stiles RBI single.
Gentry singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a fly ball to the warning track, and scored on a Benson sacrifice fly making it 14-2 in the seventh.
Wommack led off the top of the eighth with a solo homer to right, his fourth of the year.
Georgia College starting pitcher Trevor Guthrie (3-2) earned the victory. He allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings, striking out five and walking one.
Bearcats starter Robbie Hoyt (3-4) took the loss.
Mattix led the Bobcats, going 3-for-5 with two homers, four RBI and three runs scored. Wommack also went 3-for-5 with a homer, two RBI and three runs. Benson was 2-for-4 with a double, homer, four RBI and three runs.
Jones paced Lander, going 2-for-4 with a double and homer. Yeager went 2-for-5 with a run scored.
