Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. – Trailing 3-2, Newberry plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Lander baseball team, 4-3, in a non-conference game on Tuesday night.
Newberry improved to 25-14 on the season, while the Bearcats fell to 17-18 overall.
Hunter Hill (5-2) earned the win for the Wolves, going 2.1 innings and allowing one run on three hits with four strikeouts.
Robbie Hoyt (3-3) took the loss for the Bearcats, allowing two runs in one inning of relief.
A two-run double from Derek Olenchuk put the Wolves up 2-0 in the bottom of the third, but Lander tied the game on a two-run homer from Nathan Schreckengost in the top of the sixth.
Two errors on a pickoff throw allowed the Bearcats to score the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth and take a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth.
A two-out RBI single from Ben Herring tied the game at 3-3 before Olenchuk's ground ball to second was thrown away, allowing Herring to score the winning run.
Lander travels to Claflin on Wednesday for a non-conference game at 6:00 p.m.
