Young Harris ends Lander baseball winning streak, 8-5

Box Score

GREENWOOD – Zach Odom hit a three-run homer while Michael Livingston pitched a complete game as Young Harris College snapped Lander's five-game winning streak with an 8-5 Peach Belt Conference victory over the Bearcats Sunday afternoon at Dolny Stadium.

Lander, which swept a double-header from the Mountain Lions Saturday, has won its last three PBC series despite Sunday's loss. The Bearcats are 17-17 overall, 10-8 in the conference.

Young Harris improved to 12-20, 5-10.

Livingston (5-2) was the winning pitcher while JD Waite (1-3), the first of seven Lander pitchers, took the loss.

Lander took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Alex Conaway was hit by a pitch and scored on Bailey Connell's double to left. Reed Gray followed with a run-scoring single.

The Mountain Lions tied it in the top of the third with two runs on two hits and two stolen bases. Odom singled, swiped second and scored on Nick Sexton's double. Sexton stole third and came home on Rudy Gaona's ground out.

Connell put the Bearcats back on top in the bottom of the third with his eighth homer of the season, a solo liner over the left-field fence.

Young Harris took a 5-3 lead in the top of the fourth when Cory Ewald doubled, Tyler Washington walked, and Odom blasted a three-run homer to left. It was Odom's third hit of the game and second home run of the season.

The Mountain Lions increased their lead to 6-3 in the top of the eighth when Luke Miller walked, stole second and scored when Ewald reached on a throwing error by the third baseman.

Lander pulled within 6-5 in the bottom of the eighth when Carson Jones hit a two-out double into the left-field corner and Mason Dodd followed with a two-run homer just over the fence in center. It was Dodd's seventh home run of the season.

The two home runs gave the Bearcats eight in the three-game series and round-trippers in each of their last seven contests.

Young Harris extended its lead to 8-5 with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth. Odom and Sexton walked and Zach Wall reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Odom scored on a wild pitch and Gaona drove in a run with a ground out.

Dodd was Lander's leading hitter, going 4-for-4 with a homer and two RBI. Connell went 2-for-4 with a homer, two runs and two RBI.

Odom led Young Harris, going 3-for-4 with a home run, three runs and three RBI. Sexton went 2-for-4 with two runs while Wall was 2-for-5.
