North Georgia takes Peach Belt series from Bearcats

GREENWOOD – Daniel McCrary pitched six solid innings and the University of North Georgia pounded out 10 hits, beating the Lander Bearcats 8-1 Sunday afternoon at Dolny Stadium to win the Peach Belt Conference series.

The Bearcats fell to 8-11 overall, 3-3 in the Peach Belt.

North Georgia, which also won Saturday after dropping Friday's opener, improved to 12-4, 2-1.

The Nighthawks took a 4-0 lead in the top of the third after loading the bases with nobody out on two walks and a single against Lander starting pitcher Tripper Ergle. Robbie Hoyt relieved Ergle and walked Michael Gouge, forcing in the first run. Michael Bell drove in a run with a fielder's choice, Anthony Carco had an RBI single, and the fourth run scored on a throwing error.

North Georgia added two runs in the top of the fourth on Conner Hoover's RBI single and Bell's bases-loaded walk.

The Bearcats ended the shutout in the bottom of the fourth when Bailey Connell singled, advanced to second on an error, moved to third on Alex Conaway's ground out, and scored on Ryan Troutman's single.

The Nighthawks extended their lead to 8-1 in the top of the eighth on a two-run single by Trevor Sams.

Lander loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth, but North Georgia turned a double play to end the inning.

Colton Yeager singled and moved to third on Conner Davis's double with one out in the bottom of the ninth but the Bearcats failed to score.

The winning pitcher for North Georgia was McCrary (3-1), who allowed one run on six hits in six innings of work. He walked three and struck out seven, all swinging. Derrick Pickvet added two shutout innings, and Jack Fleming pitched a scoreless ninth.

Ergle (0-2) took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks in two innings. Hoyt, Joseph Whitt, Matt Thorpe, Erik Holton, Garrett Lovorn and Conner Davis also pitched for Lander.

Connell was 3-for-5 with a run scored for the Bearcats while Conaway went 2-for-4 and Colton Yeager 2-for-5.

Devin Gearhart was 2-for-4 with three runs scored for the Nighthawks, Hoover went 2-for-3, and Sams was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
