13-run inning leads Bearcats past Flagler in PBC Tourney

Box Score

FLORENCE, S.C. - Will Jones not only earned the complete game victory, but he also smashed a three-run homer to cap the 13-run, seventh inning and lead the No. 6-ranked and second-seeded Lander baseball team a 13-3 victory over seventh-seeded Flagler Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament at Francis Marion University's Sparrow Stadium.

The game was called after the seventh inning due to the 10-run rule. The 13-run inning -- which included 10 of Lander's 12 hits -- set a PBC Tournament record, surpassing the 12 runs Columbus State scored against North Florida in the 1998 tournament.

In the pool play format, Lander, which improves to 37-12, will have Thursday off and will next play sixth-seeded Montevallo at 11 a.m. Friday. The Bearcats will then face third-seeded USC Aiken at 7 p.m., Saturday.

The top team in each of the two four-team pools will square off for the PBC Tournament championship at 1 p.m., Sunday, for the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Flagler drops to 29-19.

Jones, who was named first team All-PBC as a starting pitcher, improves to 8-2 overall after striking out eight, walking two and allowing three earned runs on 11 hits in seven innings pitched.

Flagler's Kyle Schackne (3-1) took the loss with one walk and four earned runs on two hits. The Saints used six pitchers in the game. Saints starter Mike O'Reilly held Lander to two hits through six scoreless innings, while striking out nine and walking two.

Flagler built up a 3-0 lead after Bryce Evans scored on a Lander error in the third, James Jean drove in Kolin McMillen with an RBI single to left centerfield in the fifth, and Igor Baez singled in Jabe Molinaro in the sixth.

Then the Bearcats cut loose.

Lander scored its first two runs when Alex Conaway drove in Thomas Berry with an RBI single to right field and John Mangum went home on a bases-loaded walk. The Bearcats took the lead on Matt White's two-RBI single that plated Conaway and Taylor Kellner.

Zach Daly's two-run double drove in White and Will Jones, Berry singled in Colby Lusignan, Kellner's single plated JD Waite, Mangum stole home, and Conaway's hit sent Kellner home.

Leading 10-3, Jones put an end to the best inning in PBC Tournament history with his three-run, round-tripper to left centerfield.

For the Bearcats, Mangum, Conaway and Mason Dodd had two hits apiece.

For Flagler, Molinaro batted 3-for-3 and Baez 3-for-4.
