Lusignan, Jones lead ranked LU baseball past GC, 16-1

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Colby Lusignan batted 4-for-4 with six RBI, Will Jones struck out nine, and the nationally ranked Lander baseball team set a Peach Belt Conference record in Friday night's 16-1 league victory over Georgia College in the first game of their conference series at John Kurtz Field.

Lander, which pounded out 15 hits and improves to 31-9 overall and 18-7 in the PBC, set a PBC record for the longest streak without a shutout at 261 games, surpassing USC Aiken's mark of 260 set from 1996-2000. Georgia College drops to 20-13, 9-10.

The Bearcats are ranked No. 8 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association; No. 13 by D2 Baseball News; and No. 14 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.

The second game of the series will be played at 4 p.m., Saturday, with the finale at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Jones improved 5-2 overall, while allowing just one earned run on six hits in six complete innings.

GC's Jonathan McKinney (0-2) suffered the loss with three strikeouts, three walks and seven earned runs on four hits in 1.2 innings.

In the first inning, Lusignan's RBI double drove in Zach Daly and Matt White, but Georgia College bounced back with Logan Mattix's solo home run to cut the margin to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning.

The Bearcats exploded for six runs in the second inning as Alex Conaway and Mason Dodd scored on a bases-loaded walks; John Mangum's three-RBI double plated Thomas Berry, Lusignan and Ryan Troutman; and Taylor Kellner drove in Mangum.

Lander added two more runs in the third on Daly's RBI single and Lusignan's RBI triple; and four more in the fifth on Lusignan's RBI double and Berry's three-run homer.

The Bearcats finalized their scoring in the sixth on Daly's RBI groundout that scored Troutman and Lusignan's RBI single the plated White.

For Lander, Lusignan had a triple, double and two singles, while White batted 3-for-6, and Daly and Mangum 2-for-5.
