Daly's two homers paces No. 22 Lander past Trojans, 24-3

ANDERSON - Zach Daly had two home runs, including a seventh-inning grand slam, Wednesday night to lead the No. 22-ranked Lander baseball team to a 24-3 non-conference victory over Anderson University at Memorial Stadium.

Lander, which has scored 46 runs in the last two nights after defeating Claflin, 22-4, on Tuesday, improves to 25-6, while Anderson drops to 11-18. Lander, which scored a season-high runs, amassed 21 hits in the game.

The Bearcats' Joseph Whitt (2-0) earned the win after giving up one earned run on three hits in one inning pitched.

Anderson's Jonah Wylie (0-2) took the loss with one strikeout, five walks and eight earned runs on five hits in 3.2 innings.

After Lander opened up with Daly's solo homer in the first inning, the Trojans answered with Tyler Miller's solo shot in the bottom of the first to knot the score at 1-1.

The Bearcats came back with Alex Conaway's two-RBI double in the second inning and Daly's RBI single to take a 4-1 lead.

Lander stretched the lead to 8-1 in the fourth when Colby Lusignan's three-RBI double plated Daly, Matt White and Ryan Troutman; and Taylor Kellner drove in Lusignan.

Anderson cut the margin to 8-2 in the fourth on Zach McIlroy's sacrfice fly, then Lander tacked on five more runs in the fifth after Reed Gray doubled in Conaway, Daly's single plated Gray, Thomas Berry's RBI single scored Daly and White, and Berry advanced home on Kellner's single to right field.

Lander made it 17-2 in the sixth on Troutman's RBI single that scored Gray, Troutman went home on an error, Daly advance across the plate on a passed ball, and Berry drove in Sage Cornatzer.

The Bearcats stretched the margin to 22-2 in the seventh when Mason Dodd advanced home on a bases-loaded walk and Daly stroked his grand slam to right field, his 12th home run of the season.

With back-to-back solo homers by Gatlin Minick and Gray in the eighth inning, Lander increased its advantage to 24-2.

The Trojans scored their final run in the eighth on Steven McKnight's sacrifice fly.

For Lander, Daly went 4-for-5 with five runs scored and seven RBI, Gray batted 4-for-6 with four runs and two RBI, and Kellner 3-for-6, with one run and two RBI. Lusignan, Berry and Conaway had two hits apiece.

For the Trojans, Miller, Cooper and LJ Newman had two hits each.
