Baseball wins twice to complete PBC sweep at YHC

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. - Colby Lusignan had two home runs in Sunday's first game, while Thomas Berry followed with a grand slam in the second to lead the Lander baseball team to a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader sweep against Young Harris at Zell B. Miller Field. The Bearcats won 10-8 in the opener and 18-3 in the second.

Lander, which earned its second three-game PBC sweep of the season after Saturday's 2-0 win over the Mountain Lions, improves to 12-5 overall and 6-3 in the PBC. Young Harris slips to 4-9, 0-6.

In the first game, JD Waite (3-1) earned the win, striking out five and allowing three earned runs on nine hits in 6.1 innings. Andrew Reardon was awarded his first save of the season with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work.

Young Harris' Cody Beck (0-3) took the loss with four strikeouts, five walks and five earned runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings.

Berry got the Bearcats going in the third inning when his two-RBI double plated Zach Daly and Matt White for a 2-0 lead.

After Zach Wall's solo homer put the Mountain Lions on the scoreboard in the fourth, Lander stretched its lead to 5-1 in the fifth on Colby Lusignan's two-run shot to left centerfield and Gatlin Minick's RBI single that scored Taylor Kellner.

Wall came back for his second roundtripper of the game, a two-run shot to left centerfield, to make it 5-3 in the bottom of the inning.

Both teams put up five runs in the eighth to finalize the scoring. For Lander, Daly stroked a two-RBI single to the right side and was followed by Lusignan's three-run homer to centerfield. In the Young Harris half of the inning, Jimmy Pinakidis and Caleb Moore had RBI singles, Pinakidis advanced home on an error, and Wall's RBI single drove in the final two runs.

For Lander, Daly, Lusignan, Kellner and Minick had two hits apiece.  Wall went 4-for-5 for the Mountain Lions and Zach Odom batted 3-for-5.

In the second game, Lander's Colton Rogers (2-1) earned the win with three strikeouts in 1.2 innings pitched. Starter Tripper Ergle went 4.2 innings, striking out five and allowing one earned run.

The Mountain Lions' Michael Livingston (2-1) suffered the loss with four strikeouts, one walk and four earned runs on six hits in 5.2 innings.

After Nick Sexton scored on Brett Westmoreland's RBI groundout in the first inning, Lander came right back and tied it at 1-all in the second on Mason Dodd's sacrifice fly, then went up 4-1 in the fifth on Daly's two-run homer and Kellner's RBI groundout.

Zach Odom's two-run home run cut the margin to 4-3, but Lander responded with Lusignan's RBI single in the sixth and jumped out to a 12-3 lead with its seven-run, seventh inning. Dodd started the scoring spree with a two-run RBI single and was followed by Berry's grand slam and Kellner's RBI single.

Lander added five more runs in the eighth on RBI singles by White and Lusignan, who later scored on a fielding error, and Jordan Curtis finished the inning with a two-RBI single.

With bases loaded and one out in the ninth, Lander closed out its scoring on an RBI single by Reed Gray.

For Lander, White, Lusignan and Berry had three hits each, while Daly added two.
