Reynolds, Johnson lead Lander past Lady Fleet, 89-46

GREENWOOD – Ty'hesha Reynolds scored 30 points and teammate Breshay Johnson was eight for eight from the floor as the Lander Lady Bearcats extended their winning streak over Erskine to 13 games, beating the Lady Fleet 89-46 Thursday night at Horne Arena.

In winning their home opener, the Lady Bearcats improved to 4-2 on the season. Erskine fell to 1-5.

Reynolds finished with a double-double, adding 11 rebounds while dishing out seven assists. The senior guard made 10 of 14 shots from the floor, including four of six from behind the 3-point arc.

Johnson added 20 points, Mylea McKenith contributed 15 points and Destinee Langford scored nine of her 11 points in the first half. Johnson added six boards and two blocked shots.

Naomi Stuger paced the Lady Fleet with 18 points, making 12 of 14 free throws.

Lander's winning streak over Erskine began in 1998. The Lady Bearcats are now 40-17 in the all-time rivalry series.

Lander scored the first 17 points of the game Thursday and never looked back. Erskine was held scoreless until Christian Brown's basket made it 17-2 with 3:06 left in the opening quarter.

Lander led 24-4 after one period and opened the second quarter with an 8-4 run, building a 32-8 advantage.

Erskine outscored the Lady Bearcats 16-13 the rest of the half but trailed 45-22 at the break. Lander made 19 baskets from the floor in the opening two quarters (19-for-37, 51 percent) to only seven for the Lady Fleet (7-for-26, 27 percent).

Reynolds had 14 points on six of nine shooting, seven rebounds and five assists in the first half for Lander. Teammates McKenith and Langford added 10 and nine points, respectively. Stuger had 13 of Erskine's 22 first-half points.

It took more than five minutes for the Lady Bearcats to score their first points from the floor in the second half (they were limited to five free throws) until Johnson's put-back led to a three-point play, making it 53-29 with 4:23 left in the third quarter.

Reynolds hit a 3 from the left wing for a 56-31 lead at the 2:58 mark before Emani Bell answered with Erskine's only successful 3-point attempt of the game a few seconds later.

Lander scored the game's next eight points and led 64-37 going into the final period.

Reynolds hit a 3 and Zuzana Talackova scored twice for a 73-39 lead inside eight minutes left in the fourth quarter.

McKenith's layup off the fast break made it 81-42 with 5:47 to go. Reynolds hit a 3 from the left corner, giving her 30 points and making it 86-42 with 4:24 left.

Jessica Harris made a driving layup as Lander doubled up the Lady Fleet 88-44 with 1:45 to go. LU outscored the visitors from nearby Due West 25-9 in the fourth quarter.

For the game, the Lady Bearcats hit 33 of 72 shots (46 percent), 17 of 25 free throws (68 percent) and six of 26 from 3-point range (23 percent) while out-rebounding Erskine 49-34.

The Lady Fleet made 13 of 49 shots (27 percent), 19 of 27 free throws (70 percent) and only one of 12 from behind the arc (8 percent).
