Box Score MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Lander men's soccer team clinched its eighth Peach Belt Conference regular-season championship in program history on Saturday night as the Bearcats downed Montevallo, 3-1, in front of 325 fans at Varsity Field.
The Bearcats, who won Peach Belt titles in 1991, '93, '95, '96, 2006, '10, and '12 improve to 11-3 overall and 8-3 in the PBC, while Montevallo drops to 10-4, (4-4).
The Bearcats, who locked up the top seed in the PBC tournament on Wednesday night, will host Georgia Southwestern in the regular-season finale next Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The conference tournament will begin on Nov. 1, with Lander hosting a first round match at Van Taylor Stadium.
Lander took a 1-0 lead at 30:20 when Conor Felstead netted a goal on an assist from Michael Leach.
A goal from Michael Leach off a Jamie North assist gave Lander a 2-1 lead at the 63:39 mark before Ianis Ghachem put the match away with his first goal of the season off a Sam Lofts assist at 86:08.
Montevallo outshot Lander 16-15, while the Bearcats led in corner kicks, 8-3.
Lander goalkeeper Dean Cowdroy made six saves, while Montevallo's Robert Kuta had three.
