Box Score GREENWOOD – Wingate University's Taylor Leyble scored an unassisted goal from 10 yards out with 35 seconds remaining to play Saturday night to defeat Lander, 3-2, in a non-conference game at Van Taylor Stadium.
Wingate starts the season off at 1-0, while Lander slips to 1-1.
Lander will next travel to Belmont Abbey for a 2 p.m. contest on Saturday, Sept. 12.
Wingate took a quick 1-0 lead in the first half when Brooke Howell scored from directly in front of the net at 3:41 off an assist from Naomi Matley.
The Bearcats came back at 35:28 and tied the game at 1-all on Kayla Walker's free kick.
The Bulldogs struck early again in the second half and regained the lead at 2-1 at 47:49 on Kaitlyn Brunworth's shot from in front of the goal.
Noel McDaniel scored her second career goal to tie the game at 2-2 when she blasted a shot in from 25 yards out.
Lander outshot the Bulldogs, 12-11, while both teams recorded three corner kicks.
Bearcat goalkeeper Shannon DeSantis posted five saves, while Wingate's Abbey Frail had two.
