Washington leads Lander past Limestone in OT, 79-72

GAFFNEY, S.C. - JR Washington scored a game and career-high 32 points Saturday night to lead the Lander men's basketball team to a 79-72 non-conference, overtime victory against Limestone College in the Timken Center.

Lander improves to 3-1 overall, while the Saints drop to 1-3.

Washington, who connected on 10-of-19 field goals, including three treys and 9-of-11 free throws, also grabbed five rebounds. Rahu Purdie added 19 points on 7-of-11 attempts and had eight rebounds.

Washington's previous career-high was 31, which he scored in the Bearcats' first-round game against Columbus State in the 2014-15 Peach Belt Conference tournament.

Brolin Floyd paced Limestone with 21 points, while Kenshay Kirksey added 11 points, and Tim Straughter 10 rebounds.

After Lander's Matthew McClain's gave Lander a 64-60 lead with 1:32 remaining in regulation, Limestone forced the overtime on a Floyd jumper at 1:10 and Straughter's tip-in with 27 seconds left.

The Bearcats opened the overtime period with a pair of Washington free throws that put Lander back up 66-64, but Limestone regained the advantage on Brolin's three (67-66) at 3:55.

Washington tied the game at 68-all with 3:11 remaining with a layup, then put Lander up for good at 71-68 with a three pointer at 1:52.

For the game, the Bearcats connected on 26-of-56 field goals (46.4 percent), including 5-of-14 threes (35.7 percent) and 22-of-33 foul shots (66.7 percent).

The Saints were 23-of-68 from the floor (64.7 percent), including 15-of-48 three pointers (31.3 percent) and 11-of-17 free throws (64.7 percent).
