Box Score DUE WEST, S.C. – Breshay Johnson and Sakezia Kelly each posted double-doubles as the Lander women's basketball team used a 33-7 run in the third quarter to beat rival Erskine College 79-66 Wednesday night at Belk Arena.
The Lady Bearcats improved to 2-1 while Erskine fell to 0-3.
Johnson led all scorers with 26 points and shared game-high honors with 11 rebounds. Kelly added 15 points on five of eight shooting from the floor and also had 11 boards.
Ty'hesha Reynolds added 18 points while leading Lander with four assists. Ashleigh Zandi and Bre Crum added nine points apiece for the Lady Bearcats.
Naomi Stuger paced the Lady Fleet with 18 points on eight of 11 shooting from the floor and grabbed eight rebounds. Raygon Hendrix had 13 points while leading Erskine with six assists. Kristen Giles scored 12 points and Marnasha Eugene added eight points and eight boards.
The Lady Bearcats outscored Erskine 33-10 overall in the game-changing third quarter.
Lander made 29 of 73 shots from the floor (40 percent), 19 of 29 free throws (66 percent) but only two of 23 attempts from 3-point range (9 percent).
Erskine hit 24 of 60 shots (40 percent), 16 of 26 free throws (62 percent) and two of 13 from behind the arc (15 percent).
The Lady Bearcats out-rebounded Erskine 51-49. The teams were a combined four of 36 (11 percent) from behind the arc.
Lander led 16-12 with 3:26 left in the first period on Kelly's third basket of the game. But the Lady Fleet closed the first quarter with a 10-2 run as Hendrix and Tametra Willis made 3s and Stuger scored inside for a 22-18 advantage going into the second period.
Erskine's lead grew to 29-20 on Stuger's jumper with 5:10 left in the first half, completing a 17-4 run that started in the first quarter.
Reynolds hit a 3-pointer and completed an old-fashioned three-point play to pull the Lady Bearcats within 29-26 with 2:23 left until halftime. Erskine led 32-27 at the intermission.
Stuger scored early in the third quarter to increase the Lady Fleet's lead to seven. But Lander scored seven unanswered points to tie, including two free throws by Kelly, a Reynolds basket, and Zandi's game-tying three-point play that made it 34-all at the 7:24 mark.
The seven consecutive points was just the start of a much bigger run. Crum's three-point play gave the Lady Bearcats the lead for good at 40-37 with 6:25 left. Johnson's jumper upped the advantage to 47-39 at the five-minute mark.
A Reynolds bucket at the three-minute mark gave Lander 12 unanswered points and a 52-39 lead. Kelly's three-point play with 42 seconds left in the third period and another basket a few seconds later upped the lead to 60-41, completing a 33-7 run. A free throw cut the score to 60-42 going into the fourth quarter.
Erskine pulled within 13 points several times early in the fourth period and got within 12, 69-57, on Eugene's basket with 5:09 left. Eugene cut it to 12 again with a basket, making it 75-63 with 2:14 to go. But Reynolds put the game away with a pair of jumpers for a 79-63 advantage at the 1:15 mark.
